dc.description.abstract | ABSTRACT The Study of Pharyngeal Airway Space Change after Sagittal Split Ramus Osteotomy (SSRO) on MandibularPrognathism Kim, Tae Sun, D.D.S Major in Dentistry/Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Department of Medicine, Graduate School, Hanyang University (Directed by Professor Kyung-Gyun Hwang, D.D.S., M.S.D., Ph.D.) Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate a change of the pharyngeal airway space (PAS) after bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO) on mandibular prognathism. This study was focused on periodic adaptation of the PAS after BSSRO. Materials and Methods: In this study, 14 Korean patients were included. All were diagnosed with Class III malocclusion and had undergone BSSRO treatment. The PAS was measured at 3 different levels: uvula tip, low-C II, and mid-C III of the lateral cephalograms. The PAS has been measured before BSSRO, shortly after, and every 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months after BSSRO. The widths of uvula tip level, low-C II level, and mid-C III level in the PAS were measured and compared. Results: The PAS had decreased by 43%, 35%, and 41% at uvular tip level, low-C II level, and mid-C III level respectively shortly after BSSRO. It has decreased by 28%, 20%, and 22% respectively at each level after 1 month from the surgery, but it has not changed significantly after 3 months and 6 months from the surgery since then. It has decreased by 20%, 20%, and 13% respectively at each level after 12 months from the surgery comparing to before the surgery. Conclusion: The PAS does not fully recover to the original value after BSSRO. However, it seemed to be re-adapted gradually. Nevertheless, patients who are undergoing mandibular setback surgery should be screened when obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) suspected. | - |
