Abstract
The end group cross-linked sulfonated poly(phenylene sulfie sulfone nitrile)s (EXSPSSN)s with terminated ethynyl groups have been prepared for polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) applications. The chemical structure of the cross-linkable copolymers was analyzed by 1H NMR and FT-IR spectra. Molecular weight of each sample was controlled, because molecular weight affected on the degree of cross-linking. After cross-linking, the water uptake and dimensional change were reduced at all temperature ranges as compared with non cross-linked membrane, and mechanical properties and IEC are also improved. The end group cross-linked EXSPSSN showed the enhanced proton conductivity, especially at low RH (50%), the proton conductivity value of EXPSSN70 (0.0036 S/cm) was much higher than that of Nafion 212 (0.0019 S/cm). Single cell performance of EXSPSSN60 showed much higher current density of 1462 mA/cm2 at 0.6V compared with that of Nafion 212 (1032 mA/cm2) and also maximum power density of EXSPSSN60 (1198 mW/cm2) was higher than that of Nafion 212 (905 mW/cm2).
