Abstract
Introduction: Mammographic breast density is an independent risk factor for breast cancer, associated with the incidence of benign breast diseases. Few studies, however, have evaluated the mammographic density of breast carcinoma in situ (CIS) and benign breast diseases (BBD). We comprehensively analyzed differences in mammographic density in patients with breast CIS and BBD. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the mammograms of 481 patients with breast CIS and of 473 with BBD who underwent surgery, as well as the mammograms of 2066 breast disease-free women (BIRADS I) taken at a single center. Mammographic density was assessed by a computer-assisted thresholding method. The cranio-caudal view of the unaffected contralateral breast was digitized to calculate percentage density (PD). Results: The mean PDs of patients with breast CIS, BBD and of the control group were 45.91%, 47.15% and 41.65% respectively. The difference between the BBD and breast CIS groups was not significant (p=0.26), but the difference between each of these groups and the control group was significant(p< 0.001 each). Compared with individuals having mammographic densities <10%, those with densities >75% had odds ratio for BBD and breast CIS of 5.0 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.3?18.2) and 3.9 (95% CI 0.9-15.5), respectively. Conclusion: Mean PD and PD distribution patterns on mammography are similar in patients with breast CIS and BBD.
