- In general, the poor thermal stability of aliphatic polyketone terpolymer (EPCO) confines the injection molding temperature to below 240 oC, resulting in the extremely high rate of crystallization. This sometimes causes troubles in the injection molding process. In addition, the injection-molded products of automotive and electronic parts require the high impact strength. A polyester-based thermoplastic elastomer (HY) was incorporated in EPCO to reduce the rate of crystallization and to improve the impact strength.
On the rheological basis EPCO was melt-mixed with HY using an internal mixer and the morphology, rheological and mechanical properties, and crystallization behavior of the blends were investigated. For the blends with 10 and 20 wt% of HY, the size of the dispersed HY domains in EPCO matrix was decreased with the increase of mixing shear rate, which coincided with the Taylor's prediction that the breakup of domains would occur more readily as the magnitude of viscosity of the polymers got closer at higher shear rate. The EPCO/HY blend (8/2 by weight) exhibited the highest impact strength among the blends examined and the impact strength of the blends containing 10 and 20 wt% HY was enhanced with increasing mixing rotor speed. The incorporation of HY of 10 wt% has a negligible effect on the decrease of the Young's modulus of EPCO but further addition gradually reduces the modulus. The crystallization rate of EPCO in the blends was decreased with increasing HY loading level.
