A Study of W. B. Yeats's "Sailing to Byzantium" and "Byzantium"

Abstract

ABSTRACT Suh, Heeseung Department of English and Language and Literature Graduate School Hanyang University, Seoul Advisor: Prof. Rhee, Young Suck, Ph.D. This thesis aims at studying Yeats’s two poems “Sailing to Byzantium” and “Byzantium.” The year 1922 was a critical moment in his life. He thought about death, aging, art, and others seriously. His health got worse this year, and Ireland was in the civil war. This seems to have caused him to seek a world, or to create a paradise in his poetry. There are two major critics who discuss these two poems. D. J. Gordon and Ian Fletcher study images of Byzantine art. Norman Jeffares deals with terms and images that are the key to understanding what Yeats is trying to show in these poems. Charles A. Raines, Harry Modean Campbell, and Simon O. Lesser discuss the goal of these two poems. Raines explains Yeats as a modern poet uses the metaphor of “permanence,” while Campbell thinks Byzantium is a creation of Yeats’s “religious, aesthetic and practical life.” Lesser says “Sailing to Byzantium” ends with pessimism. The drafts of these two poems show the progression of the poet’s visions on life and agony. I focus on primary images: images of reality and idea: the images of reality are pessimistic, temporary, filled of anguish, and transitional; the images of idea are holy and eternal. The drafts’ progression reveals Yeats in agony and also demonstrates how he sublimates his life into art. The two finished poems are the answer to Yeats’s idea of paradise in mind. As Richard Ellmann claims in his studies on them that the situations he has been in, both physically and politically, have contributed to his perfecting these two poems. Helen Vendler, explicating the two poems’ internal and external form, says that the images are more concrete in “Byzantium” than in “Sailing to Byzantium.” In conclusion “Sailing to Byzantium” and “Byzantium” are not merely perfect in poetic form, but also demonstrate that Yeats has successfully perfected his life and his art in them as well.
