ABSTRACT Effectiveness of Admission Education Program in Intensive Care Unit MiJeong Jo Dept. of Gerontology & Dementia Nursing The Graduate School of Information in Clinical Nursing Hanyang University Directed by Prof. Jung A Kim Purpose: The purpose of this research is to determine influence and difference of the needs and need met of families of critically ill patients and educational satisfaction, after developing the information video and leaflet of admission education and providing education with leaflet and video education on families of critically ill patients, at the same time, to evaluate the influence and the difference on the duration of video education and leaflet education each, and educational satisfaction, for the education-providing nurses, therefore to provide fundamental information about life in hospital, by developing video and leaflet about admission education program in ICU. Procedure: This research is a nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design, which aims at evaluating influence and difference on needs and need met of families of critically ill patients, and educational satisfaction after providing each video and leaflet education, also simultaneously, confirming influence and difference on each duration of education with video and leaflet, and educational satisfaction on education-providing nurses, after developing an information video and leaflet based on ADDIE(Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model within this research. The research was oriented among families of critically ill patients admitted for ICU to a general hospital in Gyeonggi-do, especially on main caregivers who visited patients more than once during the duration of hospitalization in ICU, and the education-providing nurses who works in ICU and provides adimission education to families of critically ill patients about the life in ICU. The number of cohort was 30 each for video education and leaflet education, and the nurses were 49, which in total 109 people were oriented for this research. The developed information video and leaflet of admission education in ICU consists of intro, information on meeting, preparation, other information on ICU, information on hospital facilities, guidelines for using hospital services, telephone number, ways to visit hospital, patient's right and responsibility, and equipment and insert devices of ICU. The duration of collecting data for education group with leaflet was from 1 May to 15 May, for education group with video was from 20 May to 30 May, and for education-providing nurses was from 1 June to 4 June. The procedure of collecting data began with providing visit to the caregiver of both video and leaflet educational group, and asking about the general characteristics, needs and need met of the families. Then for the video educational group, the nurse provides the video and hand out the leaflet so that the families can possess the information about the ways to visit hospital and telephone number of hospital, while leaflet educational group was informed and educated in person with the leaflet by the education-providing nurses. Then on next visit, on the day after the education, the needs and need met and educational satisfaction was evaluated again, for both video and leaflet educational group. The general characteristics of critically ill patients were investigated by the researcher. Also, the education-providing nurses were evaluated in entries of the duration of education with video and leaflet each, educational satisfaction, job-related characteristics, and general characteristics. The collected data was analyzed for κ², t-test, Fisher's exact test, ANCOVA(Analysis of Covarience) by using SPSS 16.0 for Windows Program. Result: By developing video and leaflet of admission education in ICU and providing education with leaflet and video education on families of critically ill patients, the confirmed influence on families of critically ill patients and education-providing nurses is as following: 1. Families of critically ill patients 1) The first hypothesis "The education group with video will show higher needs and satisfaction of critically ill patients, than the group with leaflet' was partially supported by the result showing the education group with video showed significant higher result than the one with leaflet, regarding one of 45 need met articles indicating 'To know which staff members could give what type of information.'(t=6.239, p=.012). 2) The second hypothesis "Education group with video will show higher educational satisfaction of families of critically ill patients than the one with leaflet" was dismissed due to insignificant difference between education group with video and education group with leaflet(t=1.38, p=.173) 2. Education-providing nurses 1) The third hypothesis "The educational duration of education-providing nurses with information video will be shorter than the one with leaflet" was supported by the result showing significant increase in education group with video than the one with leaflet(t=2.65, p=0.011). 2) The 4th hypothesis "The educational satisfaction of education-providing nurses by video education will be higher than the education with leaflet" was supported by the result showing significant increase in the group with video than one with leaflet(t=-2.04 p=0.046). Result: As a result, admission education in ICU by using video is considered to be more effective method, than an education with leaflet, on increasing need met on needs of families of critically ill patients, shortening of educational duration of education-providing nurses, and increasing educational satisfaction. Keywords: ADDIE model, admission education in ICU, video, leaflet, needs and need met of families of critically ill patients, educational satisfaction and duration of education.
