Abstract
Quality of life is one of the important issues in the patients with olfactory loss. Despite high prevalence of olfactory loss in the rhinologic patients, this is typically overlooked. Olfactory loss may affect patient’s symptom and the quality of life(QoL). The aim of this study was to examine the impact of olfactory loss on quality of life(QoL) in rhinologic patients. From January 2011 to May 2012, 130 rhinologic patients who had been scheduled for the nasal and sinus surgery were enrolled. They were divided into two groups, nasal cavity disease (NCD, n=59) and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS, n=71). Somatic and psychological symptoms were evaluated using the Sinonasal Outcome Test-20 (SNOT-20) and Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R). And olfactory function was evaluated using the Korean Version of Sniffin’ Sticks II test (KVSS II test). All of the patients underwent computed tomography and allergic test. The CRS patients group had higher CT scores and the CT scores and TDI scores were correlated significantly (p=0.007). In CRS group, the anosmia group had higher scores of rhinologic symptom scale in SNOT-20 compared to the hyposmia and normosmia groups (p=0,04). In NCD group, The anosmia group had higher degree of depression, phobic anxiety in NCD group and depression, anxiety, phobic anxiety in CRS group compared to the hyposmia and normosmia groups In conclusion, this study indicated that the olfactory loss is related closely with intrinsic psychodynamic mechanism especially in CRS group.
