The squeal noise generated from a vehicle disk brake system or chatter in a machine tool primarily results from the friction-induced vibration. Since such friction-induced vibration phenomenon is accompanied by the abrasion and lifespan reduction of machine parts, it is necessary to develop a model which can analyze the exact friction induced vibration phenomena. The Coulomb’s friction model or the friction model approximated by a spline function used in commercial programs employs deterministic friction coefficients for the models. However, if one observes friction phenomena between two contact surfaces, he may realize that friction coefficients keep changing due to the contact surface unevenness. Therefore, in this study, friction coefficients are assumed to be random variables that keep changing during the time integration procedure. The accuracy of the suggested stochastic friction model was verified by comparing the results obtained by the suggested model with those of existing experimental results.-
