Abstract
Among all of the science-fiction technologies we see in movies, such as space and time travel, shrink rays, laser sword and so on. The invisibility cloak always seemed to be the kind of science-fiction technologies that researchers could never create. Notwithstanding, the recent chievements in the research of left-handed materials (LHMs) have opened an area that makes it work. This is one of many exotic properties of the so-called metamaterials (MMs) - a new class of materials. Not only recognized as LHMs, the MMs can be applied in many real applications, such as MM perfect absorber (PA), antennas, filtering and so on. This thesis focuses on the characteristics of cut-wire pair (CWP) structure - a kind of LHMs and PA utilizing electric resonance. This thesis begins by introducing the MM with the outstanding issues which energize to implement this work. A brief history of MM and how it spreads quickly in the early years of the third millennium will be presented. By considering the basic propagation properties of electromagnetic (EM) waves in the eective medium of MM and its interactions with the MM building blocks, it is possible to determine the constituent parameters. With these results, the properties of negative permittivity, negative permeability, negative index of refraction and the propagation of EM waves in PA will be examined. Next, a detailed investigation on the dependence of the magnetic resonance of CWP structure by using the hybridization model will be presented. Finally, I examine the electric resonance, which creates perfect and broad absorption at GHz frequency. The potential applications employing those MMs, such as filtering and antennas, are also discussed.
