- Abstract
- The speedy advancement of the IT industry is developing the
environment for devices that provide users with content and enhance its
smart features. As various devices come with matching resolutions, we
have witnessed the spread and distribution of a variety of devices
including desktop PC, smartphones like the iPhone, smartpads, smart TVs,
and tablets. Users, who have come to their own diverse-ranging smart
devices, have come into contact with their desired contents, which are
dismantling temporal and spatial restrictions. Also, such a change has
increased users' interest in web accessibility and users have come to
desire a consistent interface. In response to the demands, companies that
provide content and related operators have come to pay attention to the
technology for realizing a responsive web.
In this study, I aim to come up with basic data, which can serve as
guidelines for creating responsive websites in accordance with various
purposes that those websites have. While working on earlier studies and a
theoretical review to demonstrate the need for research and present a
direction for it, I have seen which responsive pattern registers the highest
level of usability at this point of time through an analysis of some domestic websites that embody responsive web design. Also, based on the
design conditions of web interface, I have examined whether specific
responsive patterns in different resolutions have visibility, intelligibility,
user convenience, and esthetic quality that are considered through the
changes in layout.
The analysis of the types of response shows that the layout shifter was
used the most frequently in the main page, while column drop and tiny
tweaks were used the most frequently in subpages. Some websites were
found to use two or more patterns. This suggests that a responsive
pattern which uses one single pattern is not the correct answer, but that
using mixed patterns could create a greater effect in visual impression on
users and delivering information to them. Furthermore, I believe that these
cases will define more other composite responsive patterns than the five
responsive patterns found by Luke Wroblewski.
Further studies will have to research and compare a variety of
responsive websites, towards the time when responsive web design settles
in the Korean web market. Research on user convenience and usability
will have to advance through empirical analyses such as
questionnaire-based statistics.
