할리우드 SF 영화의 관습적 특징 연구

국문 요지

이 글은 할리우드 SF영화의 관습적 특징에 관한 글이다. 관습적 특징 중에서도 에드워드 버스콤비, 토마스 샤츠 등에 의해 언급된 할리우드 장르 영화의 도상적 특징들에 집중하고자 한다. 영화의 도상은 오늘날까지도 통용되는 장르 영화의 정체성이다. 이러한 도상적 특징들은 사실상 대량생산 대량소비가 가능한 도시 사회속에서만 가능하다. 그러므로 할리우드 영화산업의 도시 속 탄생 과정을 본문에서 다루었다. 노동의 분업과 여가의 탄생, 영화관의 확산과 장르의 반복이라는 일련의 과정은 영화 시스템을 탄생시켰다. 그리고 웨스턴, 뮤지컬, 갱스터, 액션, SF 등의 표준화된 형식의 장르는 반복적 제작의 흐름 속에 있다. 도시 사회와 중세 사회는 차별화된다. 극단적이라고 부를 수 있는 이런 변화의 주축에는 도시의 탄생과 함께 이뤄진 정서적 영역의 변화가 크다고 볼 수 있다. 신경과민과 둔감함이라는 결과물은 인간사회의 질감을 변화시켰으며 자극과 선정주의가 부각되는 매체들의 불연속적 범람은 도시 삶과 공존하게 된다. 이와같은 도시적 삶의 정서 또한 영화장르의 관습적 반복과 무관하지 않다. 또한 시각적 스펙타클을 이용한 상업성은 서커스, 멜로드라마, 놀이공원과 같은 모습으로 근대사회의 태동과 함께 해 왔다. SF영화 장르는 현재 할리우드의 독점적 장르로 인식되고 있다. 자본에 민감한 장르이며, 시각적 자극을 이용한 산업적 성격이 강하다. SF장르는 문학적 영역에서 시작되었다. 19세기 말 무렵부터 다양한 철학과 성격을 지닌 작품들이 꾸준히 집필되어 왔다. SF문학 작품들은 간혹 영화화 되었지만, 소수의 팬층을 지닌 마이너 장르로 인식 되어왔다. 그러나 1977년 <스타워즈 (Star Wars, 1977)> 이후 SF 영화 장르는 할리우드의 주력상품이 되었으며, SF문학 장르와는 다른 형식을 지니게 되었다. 이 논문은 스타워즈 이후의 영화들을 주된 대상으로 삼고 있다. 샤츠가 언급한 할리우드 장르 영화의 도상과 같이 SF에서도 이와 같은 도상은 통용된다. 이러한 도상들은 하나의 관습이 되어 장르의 정체성이 된다. SF의 정체성은 기계 또는 컴퓨터 즉, 가상공간과 같은 모습일 수도 있고, 연구실이나 실내 병원의 무균시설이 될 수도 있다. 의도적이든 아니든 이념적 선전이 하나의 도상으로 자리매김 될 수도 있고 당대 사회의 함의가 포함될 수도 있다. SF 장르 영화 속에서 나타나는 이념적 특징은 미국사회의 거대자본적 성격을 띄고 있는 것도 부인할 수 없는 사실이다.| This paper is about the conventional peculiarities in science fiction films. Mainly focused on the iconic conventions in Hollywood genre films. Which was stated by Edward Buscombe and Thomas Schatz. The visual icons may can be the identity of genre films. These specific icons can only be possible in urban societies. So the history of film industries in Hollywood will be crutial in this text. The division of labor has brought leisure to urban spaces. And leisure is the key of the rise in film industries. The cycle of the makings of westerns, musicals, gangsters, action blockbusters, science fictions are all results of standardizings in the industry. Urban societies differs from midieval societies. The core of These extreme changes are the changes happened in the human mental lives of the population. Morbid sensitiveness and insensitiveness are the found fabrics of mediums aiming for stimulation and sensationalism throughout human societies of urban spaces. And the results of these human behavior is very much related to the film industries conventionals and repeatable genre exposure. In addtion, visual spectacles as a business have been the part of the modern foundation. Such as circuses, melodramas and amusement parks. Science fiction genre has been awared as the 매트릭 monopoly. The genre is very sensitive to capitals and visual effects. Science fiction has been founded as a literature since 19th century with many philosophies and nature. Many writings have been converted to movies, But it has been considered as a minor genre with loyal fans. But after "Star Wars", the year 1977. Science Fiction Films have become the major product of 매트릭. This paper is mainly focused after 1980's. The Icons that Schatz stated in his writings, and like any other 매트릭 genre, science fiction films also have its own icons and conventions.
