CJ ENM 드라마사업의 경쟁우위 전략 분석 : 자원준거관점(RBV, resource-based view)을 중심으로

Abstract

이 연구는 CJ ENM 드라마사업의 핵심작가 자원 기반 경쟁우위 전략과 이에 따른 경영성과를 분석하고, 그것이 함의하는 바를 살펴보았다. CJ ENM은 2016년 자회사 스튜디오드래곤을 설립하고, 산업 내에서 역량이 검증된 드라마 작가가 소속된 제작사를 인수합병 함으로써 드라마 제작의 핵심요소인 우수한 크리에이터들을 확보하였다. CJ ENM의 이러한 의사결정과 전략 실행을 ‘자원준거관점(RBV, resource-based view)’으로 분석한 결과, CJ ENM은 희소하면서도 경쟁기업이 모방할 수 없는 자원을 보유함으로써 드라마산업의 주요 경쟁력 중 하나인 기획개발역량을 극대화하고, 이를 바탕으로 시장에서 지속적인 경쟁우위를 누릴 수 있는 조건을 확보하고자 하였음이 나타났다. Jay B. Barney가 제시한 VRIO 모형을 통해 분석한 결과, CJ ENM이 영입한 작가들은 기업의 지속적인 경쟁우위 창출에 핵심적인 역할을 할 수 있는 ‘강점이자 지속가능한 기업 특유의 역량’임이 확인되었다. 스튜디오드래곤에서 이 작가들이 집필을 맡은 드라마들은 다른 경쟁 드라마에 비해 월등한 매출을 기록함으로써 기업성과에 긍정적인 영향을 미친 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구는 자원으로서 작가 역량의 특성에 대해서는 구체적으로 검증하지 않았으며, 작가 이외에 드라마의 성과에 영향을 미치는 요소들을 고려하지 않았다는 점에서 한계가 있다. 다만 향후 드라마 제작기업의 핵심자원으로서 작가의 특성을 구체적으로 정의하고, 이것이 드라마 제작기업의 성과에 미치는 영향과 함께 작가 이외에 프로듀싱 시스템을 포함한 기업 내부의 역량이 비즈니스 성과에 미치는 영향을 확인하는 종합적인 연구의 기초가 되는 연구로서 가치가 있다. This study analyzes the competitive advantage strategy of the CJ ENM drama business based on A-list writers as an internal resource. Also, the performance of the company and the implications were examined. CJ ENM established a subsidiary, Studio Dragon in 2016, and acquired the production companies including A-list writers. From the process, CJ ENM was able to acquire proven capabilities in the industry which were the core resources of drama business. Through CJ ENM"s decision-making and strategy implementation with the ‘RBV, resource-based view’, CJ ENM wanted to maximize its planning and development capabilities by possessing resources that are rare and competitors could not imitate. Initiating this strategy, CJ ENM pursued to secure the conditions for sustainable competitive advantages in the market over the decade. According to the VRIO model analysis proposed by Jay B. Barney, A-list drama writers who have been acquired by CJ ENM were found to be ‘strengths and unique capabilities’ that can play key roles in creating a continuous competitive advantage. The dramas written by the writers in Studio Dragon were found to have a positive impact on corporate performance by recording superior sales compared to other dramas. However, this study has limitations in that it does not reveal what the specific characteristics of the writer"s capabilities are as the resources, and does not consider various factors may affect the performance of drama other than the writers. Based on this research, we need to conduct full-scale studies that define the characteristics of the writer as a core resource of the drama production company, and analyze the effects of writer resources and other competency such as producing system on the performance of the company.
