고야산(高野山)과 대사(大師)신앙: 그 종교적 중층성을 중심으로

Abstract

와카야마현 북부 고야정에 위치한 세계유산 고야산은 진언종의 개조 홍법대사(弘法大師, 고보다이시) 구카이(空海, 774-835)에 의해 개창된 일본불교 최대의 순례 성지 중 하나로 흔히 ‘진언밀교의 성지’, ‘일본의 총 보제사’, ‘현세의 정토’, ‘산속의 정창원’, 나아가 ‘불교의 수도’ 등으로 불려왔으며 오늘날에는 ‘파워스포트’로도 인기가 많다. 본고의 목적은 이런 고야산의 풍경을 조감하면서 개창자인 구카이의 밀교사상 및 구카이를 신격화한 이른바 대사신앙의 다양한 측면들에 대한 검토를 통해 그 종교적 중층성을 규명하는 데에 있다. 이때 특히 단상가람(壇上伽藍)과 오쿠노인(奧の院)을 중심으로 하는 종교도시 고야산의 장소적 이원성, 납골신앙의 다양한 풍경, 입정신앙·미륵신앙·정토신앙·산악신앙·신불습합적 관념 등이 병존하는 대사신앙의 중층성 등에 주목하면서 그 안에 내포된 역설의 문제와 그 일본사상사적 의의를 밝히고자 한다. Mount Koya(高野山) at Koya-cho in the northern Wakayama Prefecture established by Kobo-daishi(弘法大師) Kukai(空海, 774-835), the founder of Japanese Shingon Buddhism(眞言宗), is one of the most representative pilgrimage sites of Japanese Buddhism, which used to be often called “a sacred place of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism (眞言密敎)”, “Great Bodaiji(菩提寺) of whole Japan”, “the Pure Land of this world”, “Shosoin(正倉院) in the mountain”, or even “the capital of Buddhism”, and nowadays is also famous for “power-spot”. The purpose of this essay is to examine the religious multi-stratum of Mount Koya, by analyzing the various sides of so-called “Faith in Taishi(大師信仰)” originated from deifying Kukai. In so doing, I will pay special attention to the multiplex of “Faith in Taishi”, such as the spatial duality of Mount Koya as a religious city unfolded chiefly around Danjogaran(壇上伽藍) and Okunoin(奧の院), diverse aspects of Cinerary Faith, the idea of Pass into Nirvana(入定), Maitreya-belief, the notion of Pure Land, Mountainous religion, phenomena related to the syncretism of kami and buddhas(神佛習合) etc., finally reviewing its paradox and meaning from the perspective of Japanese thoughts.
