Abstract
따라서 한국 프로야구의 관중 수는 경기 결과의 불확실성과 플레이오프 불확실성 모두에 민감한 것으로 확인되었다.| Professional baseball has been the most popular professional sport in Korea, attracting more than seven million spectators in 2015. Despite its great popularity, there has been little research on competitive balance and uncertainty of outcome, which are considered the two key factors for drawing spectators. To this day, most studies used yearly data and hence they are limited to include long-term uncertainty of outcome only. Since Korean Professional Baseball League has a short history, use of yearly data severely hampered in-depth analysis on competitive balance and uncertainty of outcome. This thesis looks into the determinants of the number of spectators in the Korean Professional Baseball League, with special focus on competitive balance and uncertainty of outcome. It uses game-level daily data from 2007 to 2015, and estimates panel data regression models. Daily attendance data for each game is used as the dependent variable, while winning percentage difference between home and visiting teams, home team winning percentage, games back playoff uncertainty, population, income, ticket price, climate factor, and dummy variables for days of the week are included as the independent variables. The empirical results show that uncertainty of outcome affects daily attendance in Korean Professional Baseball League. They also show that winning percentage difference and games back have significant inverse relationship with daily attendance. This thesis confirms that Korean professional baseball fans are sensitive to both game uncertainty and playoff uncertainty.; Professional baseball has been the most popular professional sport in Korea, attracting more than seven million spectators in 2015.
