간호학과 남학생의 학과 적응에 관한 질적 메타합성 연구

Abstract

한국의 간호학과 남학생의 학과적응에 대한 경험은 특별한 간호학과 선택과 동기에서 출발하였고, 남학생은 다수인 여학생과의 관계를 잘 유지하면서 학교생활을 하는 것과 간호학과 교과과정의 특수성에 적응하는 것으로 파악되었다. 남학생들은 현실에서 고민과 방황을 하나 학과적응을 위한 긍정적인 태도변화를 경험하는데, 여학생과 자신들의 다름에 대한 이해, 군복무를 통한 개인적인 성숙 등이 영향을 미치고 있었다. 한국의 경제사정이 좋지 않아 상대적으로 취업이 잘 되는 간호학과에 대한 선호가 남학생에게도 예외는 아니었던 시기를 지나, 이제는 취업뿐만 아니라 간호학이라는 전공의 장점과 적성을 고려하여 입학하는 남학생이 증가하고 있는 현 상황에서 간호학과 남학생의 학과적응을 위한 실질적인 대안이 필요하고 간호교육 현장의 변화가 필요하다고 본다. 이에 본 연구를 통해서 다음과 같은 제언을 한다.첫째, 남학생이 증가됨에 따라 간호교육에서 남학생을 고려한 교과과정의 개발과 실질적인 운영 계획이 필요하다. 이를 위해 남학생을 대상으로 희망교육 내용이나 교과목에 대한 요구도 조사가 필요하다.둘째, 지역 간호대학끼리 컨소시엄을 형성하여 남학생에게 만족도가 낮은 여성건강간호학실습이나 아동간호학실습을 캠프형식으로 운영하고 학점으로 인정하는 방안을 제안한다. 이는 남학생에게 평소 미흡하였던 교육 내용을 보완하고 실습교육의 내실화를 도모할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.셋째, 남학생의 군 복무기간을 간호학과 교육과정과 연계함으로써 남학생의 학업기간을 단축하고 군에서는 의무병의 질 관리를 할 수 있는 제도적인 장치를 마련하는 것이 필요하다.넷째, 대중과 의료인을 대상으로 남자 간호사에 대한 모니터를 통해 남자 간호사의 적절한 근무부서 배치와 돌봄 서비스 질 개선을 위한 프로그램 개발에 반영하는 것이 필요하다. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to integrate and synthesize findings from qualitative studies exploring male students’ experiences of adapting to nursing education programs so as to obtain further understanding of the phenomenon. Methods: The meta-synthesis process was primarily guided by Noblit and Hare’s approach, which consists of four stages including searching, appraisal of an individual study’s quality, data extraction for analysis, and meta-synthesizing the results. Results: Findings from the literature reviewed were synthesized into six themes: 1) extraordinary choice based on job stability and gender scarcity; 2) unexpected feeling of marginalization as minority far apart from the mainstream; 3) assimilation and negotiation for relational adaptation through perspective shift; 4) fortifying the vision and identity as nursing students by meaning making for adapting to the nursing major; 5) mutual support among colleague male students; and 6) serving in the military as way of hiding out and achieving maturation. Conclusion: The findings illustrate that nursing education programs need practical changes promoting male students’ adaptation to the program itself as well as preparation to be a professional nurse in the future.
