독일 역사주의의 긴 그림자: 경성제국대학 도서관의 독일어 장서 구성 분석

Abstract

이 글에서는 독일어 역사서에 대한 양적, 질적 특성을 분석하고, 이를 다시 경성제국 대학 서양사 분야의 교육 및 연구와 접목시켜봄으로써, 경성제국 대학 도서관이 식민지 운영에서 가졌던 위상을 입체적으로 드러내고자 했다. 먼저, 독일어 장 서들은 다양한 역사학 방법론 저서들과 저명한 역사가들의 전집류, 전 세계 구석구석을 망라하는 여러 역사서들, 그리고 묵직한 세계사 및 문화사 전집류 등을 통해서 경성제대가 지향하던 보편적 교양주의의 흔적을 뚜렷이 보여주고 있었다. 또한 다양한 전쟁 관련 자료들, 이데올로기와 정책을 망라하여 다양한 측면에서 나치를 조망하고 있는 저서들, 그리고 산 업 혁명 이후의 사회적인 혼란을 극복하기 위한 방대한 사회 정책 자료들을 통해서 제국 경영의 실제적인 필요를 해소하기 위한 의도를 읽어낼 수 있었다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 영어, 불어 장서에 대한 선행 연구에서 지적하고 있는 것처럼, 이러한 제국 경영을 위한 권력 의지가 일방적으로 관철되고 있었던 것은 아니었다는 점 역시도 뚜렷했다. 다음으로 언급되어야 할 부분은 독일어 장서가 가지는 특수성이다. 이 글에서 다루고 있는 대부분의 시기 동안 교육자 이자 연구자, 특히 유일한 서양사 분야 연구자이던 가네코 고스케가 독일사를 전공하고 있었기 때문에, 독일어로 된 역사 서들은 영어, 불어 장서들과는 달리 경성 제국 대학에서 행해졌던 강의와 연구의 성격을 가늠할 수 있게 한다. 이 경우 무 엇보다 먼저 눈에 띄는 현상은 독일 역사주의의 영향력이다. 랑케를 위시하여, 드로이젠, 트라이츠케, 마이네케, 부르크하 르트, 루드비히 리스 등 독일 역사주의 거장들의 저서들은 거의 남김없이 소장되어 있다고 해도 과언이 아닌 상태였다. 실 제로 가네코는 이 역사주의 거장들의 저서들을 그의 교육과 논문에 활용하였다. 루드비히 리스, 마이네케, 랑케의 저서들 을 강의에 활용하였고, 이들의 저서들을 가네코가 이 시기에 집필한 네 편의 논문들의 각주목록에서 발견할 수 있다. 가네 코 고스케는 역사주의를 연구하고 강의하는 역할을 맡았고, 그 역할을 충실히 담당한 인물이었다.This article attempts to investigate the role and status of Keijo Imperial University during the Japanese imperial rule of Korea by examining the characteristics of the German historical literature possessed by Keijo Imperial University These books be examined and linked to the education and research that took place at Keijo Imperial University. The analysis of the German historical literature clearly shows the intention to promote, legitimize, and facilitate the colonial regime. First, a variety of books on the historical methodology, a complete collection of a number of famous historians, and the historical literature covering every corner of the world show the ambition of Keijo Imperial University as part of the “Imperial” university system to pursue academic neutrality and universal culturalism. Secondly, the intention to cope with the practical needs of running the imperial regime and facing imminent warfare is also reflected, for example, in the comprehensive literature on the related social policies, the war-related topics, and various aspect of National Socialism. When it comes to the role of the vast body of German historical literature in the formation of history education within the Keijo Imperial university, the significance of German historicism cannot be overlooked. It seems not to be an exaggeration to say that almost all the major works written by the masters of German historicism such as Leopold von Ranke, Johann Gustav Droysen, and Ludwig Riess among others ware possessed by Keijo Imperial University. Indeed, these books were used by Kaneko Gosuke, the only Western history professor in the formative period of the Keijo Imperial University, evident in both his education and research.
