구보씨, 우미관 영화 보러 갈래요?

Abstract

1912년 만들어진 우미관은 일제강점기 조선인관객들이 즐겨 찾던 대표적인 영화관이었다. 특히 우미관은 저가의 입장료로 가장 많은 관객을 동원하는 것으로 유명했다. 때문에 우미관이 자리한 관철정은 북촌의 대표적인 유흥가였다.이 논문은 소설가 박태원이 한창 활동 중이던 1930년대 중반 우미관의 입장료와 상영된 영화들, 그 밖에 우미관이 자리한 관철동 일대의 지역적 특성을 살피고 있다. 그 방식은 박태원이 살던 공애당약방에서 우미관이 자리한 관철동까지를 산책하듯 걸어 영화를 보러 다녀오는 것을 가정해 이를 설명하는 식이다.소설가 구보씨가 우미관으로 영화를 보러 가던 길은 남대문로와 종로를 지난다. 그 거리에는 1930년대 신축된 빌딩들이 늘어서서 근대적이고 세련된 도시풍경을 보여준다. 하지만 근대적 빌딩 틈으로 난 골목으로 들어서면 빌딩 뒤편에 자리한 관철동 유흥가가 나타난다. 관철동은 어둡고 지저분하고 미로 같은 좁은 골목길이 펼쳐진 퇴폐적인 공간으로 대로변과는 다른 분위기이다. 이는 일상적으로 강제된 식민자들의 근대적 욕망이 포섭하지 못한 식민지 원주민들의 속살과 같다. 대로변과 골목의 차이가 만들어 내는 광경은 그 자체로 영화적이다.Umigwan made in 1912 was a typical movie theater which Koreans enjoyed during the Japanese colonial period. In particular, Umigwan was famous for attracting the most audience with low-cost admission. Because of this, Gwancheol-jeong which was placed Umigwan in it was the representative entertainment district of Bukchon.This paper examines Umigwan's entrance fee, the movies screened, and the regional characteristics of the area of Gwancheol-jeong in the mid-1930's when the novelist Park Tae-won was actively active. It is a way of expressing assuming that Park Tae-won walked to watch the movie from Gongaedang chemist's shop where he lived to Gwancheol-jeong.Mr. Gubo novelist went to Umigwan to watch a movie through Namdaemunro and Jongno. The streets are lined with newly built buildings from the 1930s, showing a modern and sophisticated urban landscape. However, when entering the alley from the gaps in the modern building, Gwancheol-jeong entertainment area located on the back side of the building is displayed. Gwancheol-jeong is a decadent space with dark, dirty and maze-like narrow streets spread out. The atmosphere is different from the main street. This seems to be a colonial indigenous skin that the modern desires of colonists forced on a daily basis did not subsumed. The scene that the difference between the main street and the alley creates is cinematic by itself.
