경계인: 한국 미디어 속 조선족 형상 연구 —영화 ˂황해˃와 ˂청년경찰˃을 중심으로—

Abstract

This paper deals with the representations of marginalized people portrayed in the Korean media. Marginal people refer to those who are comprised of diversity but are not fused into the mainstream culture and thus are in the margins. There are various types of people on the borderline in the Korean society although Korea has been transformed into a multicultural society. Many types of migrants based on marriage and labor are increasingly recognized as new members, but those with different races and nationalities still represent the marginal people. This paper pays a special attention to Chosun ethnic group. Even though they had lived in a foreign country for a long time, it is thought that the Chosun tribe expected to be recognized as members of the same Korean ethnics who are able to speak in Korean and thus can be easily converged into the Korean mainstream culture. However, they are still standing in the margins around the mainstream culture, unlike Japanese-Koreans or Korean-Americans.This research focuses on the movies The Yellow Sea in 2010 and Midnight Runners in 2017 to examine the representations of the Chosun tribe in the media. It also explores the image of Chosun ethnic group in other media. The Yellow Sea and Midnight Runners made a great success in box office and caused a lot of reaction to the society. Therefore, this paper analyses the image of Korean ethnic group depicted in such media to find out how the Korean society deals with them. The result can be used as an indicator to understand their positions in the society regardless of the result which can be either positive or negative. By analyzing the image of Chosun ethnic group in the various media, this research attempts to fighre out the ways how the Korean society treats them. Through this analysis, it will be possible to look back on the Korean society.
