‘금지된 질문’의 소리 -《로엔그린》의 선적인 5-6진행 -

Abstract

본 논문에서는 바그너의 마지막 낭만오페라인 《로엔그린》에서 등장하는 엘자와 주변 인물들의 내적 갈등 및 심경의 변화가 화성적으로 어떻게 나타나는지 살펴본다. 오페라의 서곡에서 나타나는 성배동기(Gralsmotiv)는 신성하고 긍정적인 이미지에 걸맞게 으뜸화음으로 시작하지만 곧 선적인 5-6진행(5-6 linear motion)을 통하여 그 강인함은 흐트러진다. 이후 5-6진행은 ‘금지된 질문’(Frageverbot)과 이로 인하여 점점 본성으로부터 멀어져가는 엘자의 내면을 묘사하는 중요한 요소로 작용하며, 더 나아가 극의 복잡한 전개와 대단원에 이르기까지 유기체적으로 매우 중요한 단초로 나타난다. 따라서 필자들은 5-6진행을 분석의 바탕으로 삼아, 화성의 변화와 드라마 전개가 연관성이 있음을 증명하였다. 바그너가 사용한 화성진행은 명확하게 드러나지 않고 은근하게 진행하는 선적인 5-6진행이며, 이것을 협화음과 불협화음으로 구성된 여러 종류의 5-6진행으로 변형시켜 다변적인 이 오페라의 드라마 진행을 돕는다.This paper examines how the internal conflicts and changes of Elsa and her surrounding people, in Richard Wagner’s last romantic opera, Lohengrin, are expressed in terms of harmony. Gralsmotiv, shown in the opening measures of the overture, begins with the tonic which is used as a sacred and positive image, but its strength is distracting through 5-6 linear motion. Henceforth, 5-6 linear motion plays a crucial role to express ‘Frageverbot’ and expose Elsa’s inner agony which is gradually getting away from her original intention owing to the ‘Frageverbot.’ Furthermore, in the process of developing and concluding the drama, it becomes a vital clue to construct the music as an organic structure. Therefore, the paper shows the interrelation of the harmonic changes and the dramatic deployment, analyzing 5-6 motion as the basis of analysis. It is reasonable to assume that the composer employs linear 5-6 motion to help the organization of the complex and multifaceted drama, through various kinds of 5-6 motions consisting of consonant and dissonant chords.
