‘압축된 시간’과 ‘열광’－3․1운동 연구를 위한 시론－

Abstract

1차대전이 끝나는 1918년 하반기부터 새로운 헤게모니 시간으로 부상하는 미국의 제국시간과 일본의 제국시간은 갈등하고 있었다. 미국의 제국시간이 민족자결주의로 포장되어 있었기 때문에, 식민지 조선에서 이 두 제국시간은 더욱 첨예하게 부딪칠 가능성이 높았다. 한편 조선 내에서 일본의 제국시간은 양화된 시공간 관념을 통하여 조선의 중하층 시간과 부합하거나 날카롭게 부딪치고 있었다. 조선의 중층시간은 민족과 근대성 사이를 동요하며 동시대성 혹은 세계사적 동시성으로의 비약을 꿈꾸고 있었다. 조선의 하층시간은 제국주의 지배를 통해 급속한 사회적 분화를 경험하였으며, 양화된 시간의 압박으로부터 벗어날 것을 상상하고 있었다. 조선의 중하층 시간은 이처럼 동요하고 있었으며, 이들은 급속하게 ‘압축된 시간’을 경험하고 있었다. 조선인 중하층 시간이 ‘자결’과 ‘개조’라는 세계사적 동시성과 만나게 될 때 그것은 쉽사리 ‘열광’으로 변하게 될 것이었다. ‘불꽃’과 같았던 3․1운동의 열광은 ‘압축된 시간’의 폭발에 의한 것이었다. 그러나 그 ‘열광’은 시간이 압축된 방식과 강도에 따라 그리고 그것이 폭발하는 공간에 따라 각기 그 모양이 다를 수밖에 없었다.이 글에서 설정한 세 가지의 제국시간과 조선에서의 3층의 중층적 시간 사이에는 각기 다른 무수한 종류의 시간이 존재한다. 그 무수한 시간은 각기 다른 방식으로 교차하거나 결합되어 있었으며, 독자적인 방식으로 압축되어 있었다. 따라서 ‘열광’의 방식과 내용도 모두 달랐다. 3․1운동의 열광 속에 다양한 차원의 모호함이 담겨 있다는 지적은 이를 두고 하는 말이 아니겠는가? 그럼에도 3․1운동에는 ‘위대한 정신의 비약’이 담겨 있었음에 틀림없다. Since the middle of 1918 when the First World War ended, the imperial time of the US and that of Japan, both on their way to becoming the new hegemonic time, were in conflict with each other. With the national self-determinism being upheld, colonial Korea was apt to see an aggravation of that conflict. Meanwhile, through westernized notions of time and space, the imperial time of Japan was both reconciling and colliding with the middle and lower class times of colonial Korea. The middle class time of colonial Korea was oscillating between nation and modernity, all the while preparing itself for a leap to contemporaneity, or contemporaneity of world history. Having gone through a rapid social differentiation under imperial rule, the lower class time of colonial Korea was aspiring to break away from the pressures of westernized time. Amidst such agitation, the middle and lower class times of colonial Korea were quickly turning into ‘condensed time.’ When the middle and lower class times of colonial Korea would come face to face with the contemporaneity of world history in the forms of ‘self-determination’ and ‘reform,’ ‘mass enthusiasm’ would ensue. The mass enthusiasm of the March First Independence Movement, which spread like a fire, was a consequence of the explosion of ‘condensed time.’ However, this ‘mass enthusiasm’ took on different appearances depending on the ways in which time was condensed, the intensity of the condensation, and where the explosion of the condensed time occurred.Countless different types of time exist across the three imperial times and the three-tiered times of colonial Korea described in this article. Those countless times have intersected or combined with each other in various ways, and been condensed in just as many ways. As a result, the manifestations of ‘mass enthusiasm’ have been different as well. Isn’t this what we mean when we say that there are numerous dimensions of ambiguity in the mass enthusiasm of the March First Independence Movement? Nevertheless, there is no denying that the March First Independence Movement came out of a ‘great leap of the mind.’
