공생과 타자: 초국가 이주 시대에 도시 공간 이론에 관한 재고찰

Abstract

이 논문은 초국가 이주 시대에 타자성에 대한 접근법을 도시 공간 이론에대한 고찰을 통해서 검토해보고자 한다. 최근 초국가 이주 시대에 타자의 문제를 다루는 방식의 특징 중의 하나는 타자의 문제를 미래에 대한 불확실성, 위험, 그리고 위협과 연관 짓고 있다는 점이다. 이 과정에서 초국가적 이주와 정착 과정에서 생성되는 복잡한 공간화 과정들은 종종 통합 아니면 배제라는 이분법적 방식으로 귀결되어 버리는 반복적인 결과를 낳고 있다. 이 논문은 초국가이주 시대에 공생(conviviality)을 통한 타자의 문제에 대한 접근법이 어떻게 기존의 한계를 넘어선 문화정치에 요구되는 새로운 접근법으로 고려될 수 있는지검토할 것이다. 이를 위해서 이 논문은 최근 도시 공간 이론 중에서 폴 길로이(Paul Gilroy)의 공생(conviviality)에 대한 논의, 안토니오 네그리(Anotonio Negri)와 마이클 하트(Michael Hardt)의 공통적인 것(the common)에 관한 논의, 그리고 리차드 세넷(Richard Sennett)의 투과 도시(porous city), 협력(cooperation) 에 대한 논의들을 검토함으로써 이들 논의가 초국가 이주 시대에 타자의 문제에 대한 새로운 이론적 통찰을 제공하고 있음을 주장한다. This paper is a theoretical reflection on recent critical urban theories. Recently migrants, foreigners, and refugees become a common feature in many urban metropolitan places, while they are very often represented as threat, danger or uncertainty in contemporary urban politics in many regions. In this process, public response to and governmental policies on the transnational movement and settlement of so many peoples are often simplified as either integration or exclusion. While seeking alternative approaches on contemporary transnational migration and othering processes in urban metropolitan setting, some of the recent urban theories have attempted to seek out new perspectives on cultural politics of transnational migration.This paper critically reviews the recent theoretical developments in contemporary urban theories — such as Paul Gilroy’s notion of ‘conviviality,’ Antonio Negri and Michael Hardt’s theory on ‘commonality’ and Richard Sennett’s idea of ‘porous city.’ In doing so, this paper argues that while raising a significant issue of how to deal with the others in urban theories, these theories provide alternative ideas on the emerging urban cultural politics of transnational migration.
