사이드의 ‘인문학적 해석학’에 대한 비판적 논고

Abstract

이 글의 목적은 에드워드 사이드의 작품들과 이의 토대가 된 그의 ‘인문학적’ 해석학을 비판적으로 검토함으로써, 이 ‘포스트-투르스(Post-truth)’의 시대에서 요구되는 텍스트 독법은 무엇이며, 그 타당성을 검증하기 위해 필요한 장치는 무엇인가를 모색하는 데 있다. 확신하건대, 연구의 목적에서 사이드의 탈식민적 인문학/인문주의의 가치와 중요성은 결코 부정될 수 없다. 정녕 <<오리엔탈리즘>>과 <<문화와 제국주의>>를 포함한 그의 각종 논저들이, 고통과 불의의 실질적인 감소 및 평화와 공존의 미래 세계를 건설하기 위해, 식민지적 억압을 정당화하거나 타자를 종속시키기 위해 창안된 담론들의 실체를 폭로하며, 권력에게 진실을 말하는 저항적 지식인으로서의 인문학자의 본분을 강조한 것이 아니라면, 대체 무엇이란 말인가. 그 어떤 비판에도, 사이드의 학문 세계가 지닌 도덕성과 당위성과 실천성은 결코 무너지지 않는다.그러나 설득력은 어떠할까. 의도와 목적의 순결성과 고결성을 인정한다고 해서, 사이드의 해석과 이의 토대가 된 그의 독해이론을 수용할 수 있을까. 이 글은 차갑고 냉정할 것이다. 그의 오스틴과 아우어바흐 해석 등에 대한 비판을 통해, 사이드의 실제적인 오류와 그의 해석론의 한계를 드러낼 것이기 때문이다. 그러나 동시에 우호적이며 옹호적일 것이다. 이 글의 궁극적인 목적은, 사이드의 결함을 그와 콜링우드의 접목을 통해 메우고, 이와 동시에 지식으로서의 인문학을 존속시키기 위해 필요한 것이 무엇인지를 탐구함으로써, 사이드적인 문제의식과 목표를 지닌 연구가 좀 더 많이 실행되고, 좀 더 많이 수용되도록 만드는 것이기 때문이다. 이런 점에서, 이 글은 사이드에 대한 오마쥬(Hommage à Said)에 다름 아니다. The main purpose of this article is, by critically examining Edward Said’s works and his ‘humanistic’hermeneutics, to suggest the proper methodology of reading texts in this ‘post-truth’age and the prerequisite for proving the credibility of the reading. For this, Said’s reading methods such as ‘contrapuntal reading’and ‘acceptance and resistance’will be thoroughly scrutinized by their temporal sequence. After that, by confuting his interpretations of J. Austin and E. Auerbach, Said’s reading fallacies as well as the defects of his theory will be emphasized. Furthermore, the union of Said and R. G. Collingwood will be suggested as the way for overcoming Said’s flaws resulted from his uncritical acceptance of the German Historicism. This rather aggressive article, nevertheless, is a homage to Said. This is because its ultimate aim is, by this correction and reinforcement of his theory(so I hope), no more than to make the postcolonial works based on E. Said’s aim for emancipation and enlightenment publish and flourish far many more.
