아르메니아 제노사이드 영화의 벡터와 지형도 연구: 기억의 정치학과 트라우마 치유의 미학성을 중심으로

Abstract

본 연구는 1915년 터키에 의해 자행된 아르메니아인 제노사이드의 역사적 아픔을 추념하는 100주기 행사가 세계 곳곳에서 진행되었던 2015년 이후, 한국에서는 관련된 역사⋅문화적 행사에 거의 주목하지 않는다는 문제의식에서 출발했다. 이러한 무관심은 코카서스에 위치한 아르메니아가 우리에게 널리 알려진 나라는 아니기 때문일 것이다. 아르메니아는 로마보다 앞선 301년에 기독교를 국교로 정한 세계 최초의 국가이자, 아라랏(Ararat) 산을 민족의 자부심으로 간직하는 영성의 국가이다. 하지만 유라시아 대륙 한 가운데 동서남북의 강국 정복자들이 지나가는 길목이 되어야 했던 지정학적 숙명이라는 부분에서 아르메니아의 역사와 우리의 역사는 닮은 부분이 적지 않다.이러한 시대적 인식을 바탕으로 본고에서는 대학살이 발생하게 된 역사적 배경을 조명하는 작업을 수행하며, 이를 바탕으로 아르메니아인들의 의식과 무의식에 트라우마로 남겨진 ‘집단기억’의 예술적 재현 양상을 고찰했다. 아르메니아인 제노사이드 문제를 주요 테마나 시⋅공간적 배경으로 삼고 있는 영화 가운데 특히 주목한 것은 영화 제작 동기의 역사적⋅사상적 분기점이 되는 작품들, 아르메니아의 민족 정체성을 지닌 디아스포라 출신 감독들의 작품들, 미학적 관점에서 다큐멘터리와 예술영화의 다양한 영상 기법을 실험한 작품들이었다. 물론, 제노사이드 문제를 언급하며 반성을 촉구하는 몇 편의 글로 세상을 바꿀 수는 없을 것이다. 하지만 미약해 보이는 이러한 움직임이 국내에는 제대로 뿌리를 내리지 못한, 제노사이드를 소재로 한 예술을 성장시키는 토양은 될 수 있으리라 기대한다. 때문에 아르메니아인들이 제노사이드의 가혹한 기억을 영상 기록으로 남기며 자민족을 위한 치유를 염원했던 ‘기억과 치유로서의 영화’ 제작을 살펴보는 것은 이러한 시대적 소명의 시금석이 될 수 있을 것이다. This study started with a critical realization that, when various places around the world were hosting 100th anniversary events to commemorate the historical pain of the Armenian genocide that was perpetrated by Turkey in 1915, people in Korea hardly paid attention to these historical and cultural events. Such indifference may have been due to the fact that Armenia, which is located in the Caucasus region, is not a country that is well known to us. However, the history of Armenia, has many similarities with the history of our people, who have had to ceaselessly endure the suffering caused by being surrounded by world powers, as destiny located us at a crossroads for powerful invaders.Based on such perceptions of history, this study considered ways in which the Armenian genocide appeared as the main theme of films. Primarily shedding light on the historical background that led to the mass genocide, this study used the historical background as a basis to analyze artistic reproductions of the “collective memory” of trauma in the consciousness and unconsciousness of Armenians. Out of the films that use the Armenian genocide as the main theme or as a temporal or spatial setting, the study especially highlighted films in which the genocide formed the historical or ideological motive for the production of the film, films that were made by directors of the Armenian Diaspora who possessed an ethnic Armenian identity, and films that experimented with the different visual techniques of documentary and art films from an aesthetic perspective. The ways in which Armenians left a visual record of the harsh memory of genocide and produced “films of memory and healing,” from a desire to heal their own people have great implications for us Koreans.
