「임씨삼대록」에 협객으로 형상화된 인물의 서사적 의미 고찰

Abstract

본고에서는 「임씨삼대록」에 협객으로 묘사된 인물의 양상을 네 가지로 분석하고, 기존 협객의 특성을 바탕으로 그것의 서사적 의미를 살펴보았다. 먼저 「임씨삼대록」의 협객은 과거 중국의 협객 그리고 조선 후기에 여항에서 숭상된 협객과 위법적 행위를 일삼은 점은 유사하였으나, 전자의 행적은 백성의 염원과는 거리가 있다는 점에서 달랐다. 그리고 「임씨삼대록」의 서술자가 기존의 협객과 거리가 먼 인물을 협객으로 서술한 까닭은, 왈짜를 미화하거나 왈짜의 욕망뿐만 아니라 자신의 욕망까지 긍정 내지 정당화하기 위해 왈짜를 협객으로 서술한 일부 문인처럼, 「임씨삼대록」에서 협객이 직간접적으로 도와준 반동 인물의 욕망을 긍정하고 그의 행적을 미화하고자 했기 때문이었다. 이러한 협객의 형상화는 반동 인물의 입장을 십분 고려하여 작품을 읽게 하는 서사적 전략이었다. 이는 「임씨삼대록」이 여타 장편 가문 소설처럼 상층인 주동 인물의 의식을 바탕으로 가문창달 및 부귀영화의 향유를 드러내었을 뿐만 아니라, 반동 인물의 애정 욕망 또는 삶을 수긍하고 재조명할 수 있는 구체적인 서사적 토대를 마련하였다는 점에서 의미가 있었다. 다만 「임씨삼대록」에 서술된 협객은 협객을 숭상하는 기층문화가 상층 문화로 전이된 결과로 간주하더라도, 그의 행적은 백성의 염원과 거리에 있었기에 기존 협객에 포함하는 것은 어려울 것으로 판단하였다.

I analyzed four aspects of character shaped as chivalrous person in 「Imsisamdaerok」, and examined the meaning of it. First, chivalrous person in 「Imsisamdaerok」 was similar to chivalrous person in the past in China and chivalrous person respected in middle-class community in the late of Chosun in terms of doing illegal conducts, but trace of the past of chivalrous person in 「Imsisamdaerok」 was different from them in terms of being far from wish of the people. Second, narrator of 「Imsisamdaerok」 described character far from chivalrous person of classic prose or chivalrous person respected in middle-class community as chivalrous person in order to affirm desire of antagonist who chivalrous person helped directly and indirectly and to glorify trace of the past of antagonist. This meant 「Imsisamdaerok」 did not only show promotion of family and enjoyment of wealth and honor on the basis of protagonist who were the upper class like other long family novels, but laid foundation to review desire for love or life of antagonist. Third, chivalrous person in 「Imsisamdaerok」 was just considered as result that basic culture respected chivalrous person spread to upper culture, however it was difficult to include chivalrous person in 「Imsisamdaerok」 in existing righteous chivalrous person. Because trace of the past of chivalrous person in 「Imsisamdaerok」 was far from wish of people.
