천도교의 가르침과 어린이 교육

Abstract

본 글의 목적은 오늘 한국사회에서 어린이 교육을 어떻게 할 것인가를 제안하는 데에 있다. 이와 같은 목적을 위하여 먼저 1920년대 천도교에서 펼친 어린이 운동에 관하여 논의하고자 한다. 나아가 천도교 어린이 운동에 담긴 정신을 동학의 세계관을 중심으로 살펴보고자 한다. 이와 같은 입론을 바탕으로 본 글은 궁극적으로 어린이를 과연 어떻게 길러야 하는가의 문제를 천도교의 세계관을 중심으로 전개해 나가고자 한다. 1920년대 김기전, 방정환 등이 주축이 되어 펼쳤던 어린이 운동은 천도교의 이념인 동귀일체의 삶을 이 지상에 펴기 위한 하나의 인간운동이었다. 따라서 이 운동에는 천도교의 가르침인 동귀일체(同歸一體)와 후천개벽(後天開闢)의 정신이 담겨져 있다. 즉 동귀일체가 지닌 ‘더불어 사는 정신’과 후천개벽이 지닌 ‘우주적 공동체로서의 삶’이 이에는 담겨져 있는 것이다. 이러한 사상적 배경을 지닌 1920년대 천도교의 어린이 운동은 곧 오늘 현대 사회가 겪고 있는 가장 심각한 문제의 하나인 약육강식, 적자생존이라는 의식에서부터 벗어나 공생과 상생의 장으로서 삶을 인식하게 하는 운동이기도 하다. 따라서 오늘 어린이 교육은 ‘더불어 사는 정신’과 ‘우주적 공동체로서의 삶’이라는 문제에 그 초점이 맞추어져야 한다고 본다. 바로 이와 같은 정신은 오늘이라는 현대에서 우리가 겪고 있는 위기를 벗어나 새로운 미래를 만들 수 있는 힘이 되기 때문이다. 본 글은 바로 이와 같은 천도교의 가르침에서 오늘의 올바른 어린이 교육의 방향을 찾을 수 있을 것으로 보고 있다.

The purpose of this paper is to show how we educate the children in the teachings and doctrines of Chondogyo. To accomplish this I will first discuss the children’s movement which was developed by Chondogyo in 1920s. Then I will examine the spirit of this movement with a focus on the world view of Chondogyo. I will thus show how we raise and educate our children with a focus on the world view of Chondogyo. The Children’s movement was developed in the 1920s by Kim Ki-jeon and Bang Jeong-hwan as a human movement to practices the idea of Chondogyo. This is the life of donggwiilche(同歸一體, returning to origin and becoming one) and hucheon gaebeuk(後天開闢, the post-cosmic creation). Therefore it has the spirit of donggwiilche, ‘the mind of the shared life’ and of hucheon gaebeuk, ‘the life of the cosmic community’. The Chondogyo’s children movement was designed to overcome the idea of the law of the jungle and the law of the survival of the fittest. It is a synergistic concept of life which benefits all species. Therefore today’s education of children focuses on the ‘mind of the shared life’ and ‘the life of the cosmic community’. This teaching is the power which overcomes the crisis in modern society and will create a new future. This paper will find expresses the true and upright direction for children’s education in the doctrine of Chondogyo.
