Abstract
An official hat is designed to protect and decorate head and to stick to formality according to social status and ceremonial rules. Koreans considered head dear in the past and put great emphasis on official clothes to symbolize social status. The official hat had pragmatic, decorative, and symbolic meanings since the Chosun dynasty. The customs, aesthetic consciousness, regional and weathers factors were reflected in the developmental process of the official hat. This study aims to explore an historical overview of traditional Korean official hats and its cultural, social, and artistic values. Systemic attempt is made to explain the Korean beauty, pragmatic functions, and symbolic status meanings of official hats.
