미국에서의 우생학 실험: 오네이다 공동체, 1848-1880

Abstract

이 논문의 목적은 성경 공산체제(Bible communism)를 지향했던 오네이다 공동체(Oneida Community)의 선택적인 출산(selective breeding) 기획을 고찰하는 것이다. 오네이다 공동체는 존 험프리 노이스(John Humphrey Noyes, 1811-1886)가 1848년에 설립하였고, 1880년 1월 1일 해체하였다. 오네이다 공동체에서는 1869년-1879년 사이 지적·육체적·정신적·영적으로 우수하다고 판단한 남녀를 선택하여 이른바 우량종 육성(stirpiculture) 실험을 시행하였다. 노이스는 완전주의신학(perfectionism), 플라톤(Plato)의 국가, 농업가들의 육종, 다윈(C. Darwin) 및 골턴(F. Galton)의 이상과 과학적 이론을 기초로 우량종 육성 실험을 기획하였다. 이는 포지티브 우생학, 즉 선택적인 출산에 의한 우성 인간의 창조와 우수한 형질의 보존과 유지를 위한 것이었다. 이 논문에서는 오네이다 공동체의 형성과정, 복혼(complex marriages)과 남성 사정 억제(male continence)라는 공동체의 제도, 그리고 우량종 육성 실험의 과학적 기초와 그 결과를 살피고, 이로써 오네이다 공동체에서 행해진 우량종 육성실험이 미국에서 실현된 최초의 우생학적 실험이었음을 밝힐 것이다. 이는 미국 우생학 운동의 초기 역사에 대한 이해의 지평을 넓히는 계기가 될 것이다.

The paper is to review the selective breeding experiment which took place in the Bible Communist Oneida Community in New York State. The Community was founded in 1848 by John Humphrey Noyes and disbanded in 1880. It became a Oneida Ltd., which today is a multinational cutlery manufacturer. Between 1869 and 1879 there was a stirpiculture (a selective breeding programme) with parents chosen for intellectual, physical and spiritual characteristics. Fifty-eight children were born. The programme was inspired by Noyes’ theology of Perfectionism, Plato’s Republic, agricultural selective breeding and concerns about human heredity. It was later justified by Noyes with the writings of Darwin and Galton. The children were followed up and deemed to be superior in physique, intellect, health and other characteristics. This article seeks to expand current understanding of the early history of eugenics movement in the United States. Additionally, this article situates the Community’s leader John Humphrey Noyes as an early eugenist in America.
