Abstract
Light rail transits were introduced to improve transportation services in areas where public transportation such as subways may not be efficiently serviced. In addition, light rail transit may contribute to the local economic development through population inflow and land development. However, little empirical studies have been conducted on the effects of the light rail system on land use and population changes. This study analyzed the impacts of light rail transits of Busan-Gimhae, Yongin, and Uijeongbu on the land use change and population inflow in the light rail station areas. The results show that land use change and population inflow are not significantly different in most of light rail transit stations areas compared to other areas in the same municipalities. These results indicate that the simple installation of a light rail transit system may not guarantee the local economic development including land development and population inflow in the station areas. Therefore, it is necessary to provide a strategic plan for the development of the light rail station areas in the long-term point of view.
