고령자의 노인기준연령에 대한 인식이 사회참여에 미치는 영향

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 현재 ‘노인’으로 규정되고 있는 65세 이상 인구의 노인기준연령에 대한 인식을 살펴보고, 노인기준연령에 대한 인식이 사회참여에 미치는 영향을 분석하는 것이다. 분석자료로 보건복지부와 한국보건사회연구원에서 수행한 ‘2017년도 노인실태조사’ 원자료를 사용하였으며, 대리응답을 제외한 10,073명을 분석대상으로 하였다. 주요 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 현재 ‘노인’으로 규정되고 있는 65세 이상의 개인들 중 65세를 노인의 기준연령이라고 생각하는 비율은 12.8%에 불과하였으며, 절반 이상은 70세를 노인의 기준연령으로 생각하고 있었다. 둘째, 이항 로지스틱 분석 결과, 노인기준연령에 대한 인식은 여가문화 참여에 통계적으로 유의미한 영향을 미치지 않았다. 이와 달리 노인기준연령을 높게 인식할수록 평생교육 활동 및 동호회에 참여할 확률은 더 높게 나타났다. 노인기준연령을 65세로 인식하는 경우에 비해 71～75세로 인식하는 경우에 자원봉사활동에 참여할 확률이 높게 나타났다. 본 연구에서 나타난 결과는 연대기적 나이보다 개인이 갖는 연령 인식이 실제 생활이나 활동에 유의미한 영향을 미치고 있음을 나타내는 것이다. 이러한 연구결과를 토대로 개인적 그리고 사회적 차원에서 건강하고 활기찬 노후를 위한 시사점을 제시하였다. The purpose of this study is to examine the perception of when old age begins (perception of old age) and the impact of the perception of old age on social participation. We used data obtained from the 2017 National Survey of Older Koreans conducted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs, a nationally representative study of older adults aged 65 and over. The sample included 10,073 older adults. We found that older adults had a different idea about old age. In particular, 57.6 percent thought that old age starts at 70 years and only 12.8 percent thought it starts at 65 years. Also, the perception of old age predicted social participation after controlling for socio-demographic variables. In particular, older adults who think that old age starts later had greater participation in lifelong education and club activities. These findings highlight the importance of the perception of old age for an active life.
