언어폭력 금지를 통한 여성 위상 제고 활동 연구

Abstract

이 글은 19세기 후반에서 1910년 무렵까지 여성에게 가해진 언어폭력의 문제에 집중한 것이다. 당시 가정에서 여성은 심한 포학과 욕설에 노출되었고, 심지어 ‘이름 없음’이라는 존재부정의 폭력까지 당했다. 사회에서는 불특정 다수에게 음담패설의 대상자가 되는 폭력을 당하기도 했다. 이럴 때에, 이 문제를 지적하고 시정하고자 하는 노력이 다각도로 이루어졌고, 그 과정은 여성의 위상을 제고하는 데 일조하는 일이었다. 이 논문에서는 그 주장과 활동들을 발굴, 제시하였다. 그 활동이란 이런 것들이다. 첫째, 기독교를 중심으로 벌어진, 남성의 도덕성 함양을 통한 가정 회복 활동, 과학 기술의 전파와 출판물 전파를 통해 태아의 존재를 인식하게 하는 활동이다. 이 활동의 효과로 가정 폭력이 줄면서 자연히 욕설 등의 언어폭력도 줄었고 태교를 위해 부모 모두가 언어를 조심하게 되었다. 둘째, 근대 신문을 중심으로 펼쳐진, 미개의 상태를 벗어나 문명국으로 가야 한다는 논리에서 이루어진 서양 예절(에티켓)의 전파 활동, 풍속 교화의 차원에서 이루어진 연희 내용의 점검 활동이다. 결국 이런 일련의 활동들이 어우러지면서 여성의 위상은 점진적으로 달라지게 된 것이었음을 밝혔다. Verbal violence against women, which was rampant from the late 19th century to the beginning of the Japanese colonial period, becomes the target to be discussed in this article. At that period, the existence of female was not only negated through the social tradition of calling them as nicknames, but also vulnerable to profanity. Female, therefore, became easily to the victims of violence; it caused to initiate a social consensus conducive to the promotion of the authority of female. This writer traces to all these various social consensus. The most distinct movements second to none came from Christian realm; cultivating of a male morality for a sound family dynamics as well as spreading of an educative propaganda for the authority of the fetus as a human being. It brought forth the decrease of domestic violences such as verbal attack against female and her careful choice of words in relationship with her fetus. In addition, another consensus movement appeared as a contextualization movement in digesting a newly accepted Western cultural heritages of ‘etiquette.’ Negative evaluation of female in social parties and activities met a new phase of change toward accepting the authority of female and her own independent decision. Behind this ambivalence did a gradual promotion of the authority of female occur.
