Abstract
Nowadays, several fluid flow devices operate at high pressures, which makes the working fluid’s properties in the supercritical region vary from the ideal. Imaging of the supercritical region has shown that a discrete two-phase flow process is less observed at the high-pressure conditions. As an example, liquid injection process applies dense-fluid jets without the break-up of liquid droplets instead of classical sprays. At low pressures, primary and secondary atomization occurs, which leads to the formation of continuously evaporating droplets. At high pressures, however, the fluid’s surface tension decreases as the intermolecular interaction becomes symmetrical at the liquid-gas interface. The resultant force on the liquid becomes stronger than the one applied on the gas, resulting in an atomization inhibition. The boiling point of the mixture, on the other hand, increases, thereby making the boundary between the phases disappear. Owing to these properties’ modifications, the discontinuous phases are located in the subcritical region. For dense or gaseous fluids, however, their characteristics are maintained, and pseudo-boiling points, similar to subcritical region’s boiling points, with a continuous but considerably large gradient can be observed. In this pseudo-boiling range, the specific heat ratio increases sharply, and energy obtained by heat is used in volume expansion (while density drops sharply), instead of temperature rise. The pseudo-boiling phenomena of between dense fluids and gaseous fluids and the completely different properties of the two type of fluids near the pseudo-boiling region greatly reduce the accuracy of numerical analysis. Particularly, in dense-fluid regions similar to the behavior of liquids, kinetic viscosity increases sharply as temperature decreases, but mass diffusion and heat diffusion decrease sharply. These features greatly enhance the Schmidt and Prantdl numbers, thereby reducing the predictability of the turbulence model (especially if it is a RANS-based model). In LES models, the large eddy current turbulence is directly calculated, whereas the small eddy current turbulence is modeled. A real fluid multi-environmental probability density function (MEPDF) approach has been developed to numerically investigate physical processes such as normal or cryogenic turbulent mixing and combustion under supercritical pressures. The present work employed the open source code OpenFOAM and compared the RANS and LES models. The MEPDF approach, combined with the conserved scalar formulations and real fluid libraries, is applied to illustrate the effect of scalar variations on real fluids’ turbulent mixing process at transcritical and supercritical spray conditions. Consequently, thermodynamic properties indicating non-ideal behavior in the quasi-boiling region and the stability of the computational numerical analysis are greatly reduced. Therefore, to solve the instability problem and improve calculation speed, FGM(flame generated manifolds)-based tabulation is applied. To accurately predict high nonlinear thermodynamic properties over a wide range of pressures and temperatures, this approach employs an advanced RK-PR model with PR or SRK equations of both standards and high-density fluids correction models. Additionally, flame structures, obtained using the extended flamelet equation by adding the real gas model, are redefined in FGM-based libraries, and a transient model is added to fill the middle branch region. Numerical results show that the current fluid model has the ability to simulate essential features of a supercritical region called 'pseudo boiling effect'. All results are compared with those of GH2/LN2, a coaxial injection experiment of heterogeneous species, except for the cryogenic nitrogen injection experiment. Spray-A, which is a single injection experiment of multiple species, and RCM #3 (pure oxygen/hydrogen flame) also showed different flow pattern and combustion behaviors. The difference between these RANS / LES-based models emphasizes that all internal combustion engines undergoing transcritical processes must either use a LES-based turbulence model or use a modified RANS-based model to be used in transcritical processes.
