Abstract
The present study aims to identify determinants that affect optimistic bias toward HIV/AIDS. We examined the relationship between optimistic bias and demographic determinants, the level of HIV/AIDS knowledge, both direct and indirect personal experiences and stereotype about people living with HIV/AIDS. Moreover, this study examined the impact of optimistic bias on HIV prevention behavior. The results of the secondary data are as follows. Koreans have an optimistic bias about HIV/AIDS. More specifically no one responded that they were highly likely to be infected with HIV/AIDS, and 94.2% of all respondents likely to underestimate their likelihood of HIV infection. Females are more optimistic biased toward HIV/AIDS than males. Optimistic bias differed across age. Thus, those who were in their twenties had a significantly lower optimistic bias than those in their 10s and those aged 50 and over. Education level did not affect optimistically biased toward HIV/AIDS. Optimistic bias did not have a significant correlation with AIDS knowledge, indirect personal experience, and the frequency of the extradyadic sexual intercourses. However, those who had personal experience of engaging in sexual intercourse outside of committed relationship were less optimistic biased toward HIV/AIDS than those who do not engage in this kind of relationship. Also, people who perceived greater stereotype about HIV infected were less optimistic biased toward HIV/AIDS. And the last, people who less perceive optimistic bias toward HIV/AIDS tend to engage in prevention behavior.
