Abstract
This study was designed to investigate the role of self-consciousness in the relationships between contingencies of self-worth based on superiority, others' approval and academic help-seeking, concealment. The adopted scales for this purpose were conducted to 475 high school students, and 417 participants were chosen for final analysis. Using SPSS 21.0, this study investigated correlation of each variables, and conducted independent sample t-test to examine whether there is sex differences in each variables. Next, hierarchical regression analysis was conducted to investigate the mediating effect of self-consciousness in the relationships between contingencies of self-worth based on superiority, others' approval and academic help-seeking, concealment. Finally, Sobel-test was conducted to examine the significance of indirect effects. The results were as follows; First, there were significant sex differences in self-consciousness and academic help-concealment. Female high school students’ self-consciousness, social anxiety, academic help-concealment score was significantly higher than male high school students. Second, contingencies of self-worth based on superiority and academic help-seeking showed a significant positive correlation, and contingencies of self-worth based on others' approval and academic help-concealment also showed a significant positive correlation. Third, private self-consciousness and academic help-seeking showed a significant positive correlation, and social anxiety and academic help-concealment also showed a significant positive correlation. On the other hand, the correlation between public self-consciousness and academic help-concealment, academic help-seeking was not significant. Fourth, the partially mediating effect of private self-consciousness was statistically significant in the relationship between contingencies of self-worth based on superiority and academic help-seeking. Lastly, the fully mediating effect of social anxiety was statistically significant in the relationship between contingencies of self-worth based on others' approval and academic help-concealment. The meaning and implication of this study are as follows; First, while existing studies have investigated university students’ contingencies of self-worth, this study has investigated high school students’ contingencies of self-worth. Second, while existing studies about help-seeking were limited to professional help-seeking, this study was focused on academic help-seeking. Third, the higher the private self-consciousness, the higher the academic help-seeking, but the higher the social anxiety, the higher the academic help-concealment. This result means that decreasing social anxiety and increasing private self-consciousness can make high school students more successful at school. Lastly, as contingencies of self-worth based on others' approval and social anxiety have a positive correlation, lowering others' approval can lead to social anxiety. The suggestion about following future studies are as follows; First, learning is the most interested area with adolescents, but help-seeking studies for adolescents were limited to professional help-seeking. Therefore, more studies about academic help-seeking are needed. Second, decreasing social anxiety and increasing private self-consciousness can make high school students seek academic help. There are also many studies on decreasing anxiety, but studies related to private self-consciousness are insufficient. Therefore, more studies about private self-consciousness are needed. Third, while this study arrived at a conclusion that others' approval can lead to decreased anxiety, the studies about others' approval are not sufficient. Therefore, more studies about contingencies of self-worth based on others' approval are needed.
