Abstract
Electromagnetic wave absorbers have been considered as a critical issue for the development of digital systems in order to suppress the electromagnetic interference (EMI) in electronic devices and their component. The absorption effectiveness of materials depends on their conductive, dielectric, and magnetic loss properties. Especially, magnetic materials have been widely used to effectively absorb the EMI in high frequency region. The magnetic absorbing properties are affected by their ferromagnetic resonance behaviors in high frequency region. In order to increase the absorption frequency, the magnetic materials require to have a high saturation magnetization (Ms) as well as a high anisotropy field (Han). This indicates that ferromagnetic hollow fibers with high shape Han should be a good candidate material for fabricating high frequency absorber. However, the details of the frequency dependent magnetic permeability behavior of these fibers and their composite sheets have not been fully understood particularly the sheets with high particle volume fraction. This means that the development of practical and precise computation methods in the magnetic permeability calculation is an urgent issue to develop efficient EM absorbers working in high frequency region. In this thesis, a new calculation method was suggested to understand the effective permeability behaviours of composite sheets containing high concentration of magnetic particles. The theoretical approach was carried out to calculate the eddy current loss of hollow fibers including their clustering effect in composite sheets with high particle fraction. The calculation method was developed based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation and the effective medium theory with the consideration of the intrinsic material parameters and the shape effects of the particles. The modification terms, such as eddy current loss, magnetostatic correction with particle fraction, and clustering effect, were also proposed. The validity of these modification terms was proven by the measured results of manufactured composite sheets with Fe-Co hollow fibers. As a result, it was confirmed that the changes in frequency dependent magnetic permeability behaviours of composite sheets according to the intrinsic properties of the particle (saturation magnetization, geometric shapes, electrical conductivity, and so on) or the distribution of particles in the composite (volume fraction and clustering) were well predicted and analysed by the proposed calculation methods.
