해월 선생의 행적 - 이필제의 亂 이후, 10년을 중심으로

Abstract

본 글은 동학의 2세 교주인 해월의 행적에 관한 연구이다. 특별히 해월의 행적 중 1870년대와 80년대 초반에 집중하고자 한다. 이 시기는 해월을 비롯한 동학의 교도들이 이필제의 난에 직접적으로 연루되어, 관의 추적을 받고, 그러므로 매우 어려운 상황에 빠진 때이기도 하다. 이와 같은 시대에 해월은 어려움에 빠진 동학의 교단을 다시 일으키기 위하여, 매우 구체적이고 정통적인 방법을 사용한다. 즉 종교적인 결속을 이루기 위하여 여러 차례 특별수련을 단행하는 한편, 종교적 의례를 정례화하므로, 의례를 확립한다. 또한 동학의 정통성과 독자성을 확보하기 위하여 동학 역사를 정리 간행하고, 경전을 간행한다. 특히 해월이 중심이 되었던 경전의 발간은 이 시기 매우 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 많은 문헌을 검토해 보면, 그 당시까지만 해도 스승인 수운의 가르침을 담은 글에 관하여 '경전'으로서의 인식보다는 '문집'의 의미가 더 강했었다. 그러나 해월은 이를 모아 한 권의 책으로 간행을 하면서 '경전'이라는 이름을 부치게 된다. 그러므로 수운 선생을 단순한 동학의 선생이 아닌, 성인의 반열에 올려놓는가 하면, 儒敎나 西道와는 다른 독자적인 가르침을 지닌 종교로서 그 정체성을 확립하는 계기를 마련한다. 이와 같이 1871년 이필제의 난 이후 어려워진 동학의 교단을 해월은 수련, 의례, 역사서 및 경전 간행이라는 매우 종교적이고 신앙적인 일에 충실하므로 궤멸의 교단을 다시 일으키는 계기를 마련한다. 그러므로 1890년대 동학의 교단을 전국적인 신앙조직으로 만드는 바탕을 마련하고, 나아가 敎祖伸寃運動. 갑오동학혁명 등 한국근세사에 빼놓을 수 없는 매우 중요한 일들을 주도하는 그 바탕을 마련했던 것이다.

This study aims to investigate the life of Haewol, the second Leader of Donghak, especially the period from 1870 to the early 1880s. This was a very crucial period of history because many Donghak followers, including Haewol, were involved in the revolt by Piljae Lee and were killed by government forces. Haewol used a very specific, but traditional, method to revive Donghak, which had been in decline. He directed spirirual training for religious solidariry and established rirual formalities. He published the Annals of Donghak and its Scripture in order to secure its legitimacy and independence. The publication of the Scripture has a very significant meaning in this period. It was Haewol who called the collection of the teachings by his Mentor, Suun, the ScriptUre of Donghak. With its publication, Suun acquired the status of a saint not just a teacher, and Donghak was now able to start off as a religion with independent teachings from Confucianism and Catholicism. To summarize, Haewol revived Donghak, which had been in severe difficulties since the revolt by Pilje Lee in 1871, by focusing on such religious work as providing religious training, establishing its rituals, and publishing its Annals and Scripture. On the basis of all these, Donghak was able to become a national religion which played an important role in such events as the Campaign to Exonerate the Founder and the Gapo Donghak Revolution in early modern Korean history.
