이문열의 작가 의식과 세계 인식 태도 - 중심, 변경, 초월의 문제를 중심으로

Abstract

이문열의 정치성은 문학의 안과 밖에서 동시에 제기되면서 과도하게 이슈화 된 감이 없지 않다. 이로 인해 그의 문학에 대해 일정한 선입견을 가지고 보는 경향이 있다. 가령 우리가 『시인』, 『금시조』, 「들소」 등 이른바 ‘예술가소설’로 분류되는 작품들이나 『영웅시대』나 『변경』과 같은 역사적인 사건과 상황을 다루고 있는 소설들, 그리고 『레테의 戀歌』나 『추락하는 것은 날개가 있다』와 같은 낭만적인 연애소설들을 과도하게 정치적인 관점으로 이해하고 판단하여 그것이 은폐하고 있는 의미와 가치를 발견하는데 장애가 되기도 한다. 그의 소설 중 비교적 정치성이 강하게 드러나는 『선택』의 경우 비록 페미니즘 진영으로부터 비판을 받기는 했어도 시대의 흐름에 무관하게 한국사회(특히 한국 남성)의 기저에 내재해 있는 정치적 무의식을 표출하고 있다는 점에서 적지 않은 관심과 논쟁을 이끌어낼 수 있었다. 『선택』에 드러난 보수적인 정치성이 페미니즘의 진보적인 정치성을 충격함으로써 이 소설은 우리 사회의 새로운 이념 형성에 일정한 긴장의 축으로 작용한 것이 사실이다. 하지만 이 긴장의 축이 작가 개인의 과도한 정치성의 노출로 인해 구축되지 않는 경우도 있다. 그의 소설 중 『호모 엑세쿠탄스』가 여기에 해당된다. 이 소설은 ‘노무현 정권 출범 이후 급변한 우리의 정치 현실을 직접적으로 다루고 있’으며, 그 시각은 ‘80년대 386세대가 주도하는 정치 현실을 시니컬하게 비판하는 데에 모아지고 있’다. 이로 인해 이 소설은 선과 악의 구도가 지나치게 이분법적이어서 서로 대립하는 두 세계 사이의 어떤 접점이나 매개의 가능성을 발견하기가 쉽지 않다. 그의 소설은 선과 악이 견고하게 구축됨으로써 여기에 대화와 소통의 정치성이 끼어들 틈이 존재하지 않는다. 좌든 우든, 진보든 보수든 이들의 이념이 대화와 소통을 통하지 않고 극단화 될 경우 남는 것은 공공의 선이나 공동체의 운명에 대한 깊은 이해와 성찰이 아니다. 이문열의 소설이 많은 독자층과 평자들의 관심을 받아왔음에도 불구하고 좌와 우, 보수와 진보의 차원을 떠나 모두가 공감하는 어떤 보편타당한 이념을 제시하고 있느냐 하는 문제에 있어서는 아쉬움이 있을 수밖에 없다. 이것은 이문열 개인에게만 해당되는 문제가 아니라 우리 작가 모두에게 해당되는 결핍의 정수리 같은 것이라고 할 수 있다. 이분화 되고 극단화 된 이념의 체제내지 구조에서 벗어나 그것을 객관적이고 총체적으로 바라보고 또 그것을 형상화 할 수 있는 문학의 출현이 요구되는 이유가 바로 여기에 있다. Yi Mun-Yol's politics was controversial inordinately in and out of the literary. It led to the tendency that people have specific prejudice on his literary. His works such as 〈the Poet〉, 〈the Golden Phoenix〉, and 〈Wild Ox〉 are categorized as 'artist's novel', and he wrote about historical cases and situation in 〈the Age of Hero〉 and 〈the Border〉, and romantic love in 〈Lette's Story〉, and 〈All Thatl Falls Has Wings〉. However they are understood and evaluated inordinately in the political point of view, then it leads to obstacle that interrupts to find the meaning and value hidden in the novels. Though 〈Choice〉, which shows politics strongly, was criticized by feminists, it expresses political unconsciousness internalized in Korean society, especially men in Korea, regardless of the flow of history. Then it could be interested and argued a lot. As a matter of fact the conservative politics revealed in the novel collides with feminism's progressive one, then it worked as an axis of tension in forming new ideology in Korean society. But in some cases the axis of tension is not formed, as the author expresses the politics excessively. 〈Homo Executans〉 is the case. It says about Korean political reality, which is radically changed since Roh Mu-Hyeon's advent. It is the view to criticize political reality led by 386 generation of 1980's cynically. Then the confrontation between good and evil is binary excessively and it is hard to find a point of contact or mediation. As his novel builds concrete good and evil, it does not have a space for politics of conversation and communication. Whoever is leftist or rightist, and conservative or progressive, if they are polarized without conversation and communication, the public good and community's destiny cannot be understood properly. Though his novels are loved by many classes of readers and critics, it is the matter that he proposes the ideology with universal validity regardless of the level of left or right and conservative or progressive. It is not his only problem, but all the writers in Korea. Therefore the literary, which can get out of the polarized ideology system or structure and shows it objectively and generally, is required to appear.
