‘신도’의 성립 - 구로다 테제를 중심으로 -

Abstract

일본에는 다른 나라에는 없는 ‘신사’(神社, 진쟈)라는 종교시설과 ‘신기’(神祇, 진기)라는 신앙형태가 있다. 오늘날 이 신앙형태는 일반적으로 ‘신도’(神道)라 표기하고 ‘신토’로 읽으 면서 그것을 불교나 기독교 등과 대비하여 ‘자연발생적인 일본 고유의 민족종교’로 보는 것이 세계적으로 통용되는 상식이 되어 있다. 특히 일본에서는 이런 이해가 종래 여러 형태의 일본문화론을 통해 일본 고유의 천황제와 관련하여 반복적으로 제기되어 왔다. 본고의 목적은 주로 일본 중세사가 구로다 도시오의 테제를 참고삼아 이와 같은 상식적 견해의 타당 성을 검토하는 데에 있다. 구로다에 의하면, 오늘날 ‘신토’라 불리는 신도는 중세사회의 현밀체제 속에서 불교사상을 기반으로 하여 새롭게 역사적으로 성립된 것으로, 그 본질은 소박한 가미(神)신앙이나 신사신앙이라기보다는 민중통치를 위한 국가이데올로기에 있었다. 나아가 이런 신도가 불교나 유교에 비견될 만한 독립된 하나의 자립적 종교로 간주된 것은 근세 유가신도 및 복고신도를 거쳐 근대 국가신도 성립기에 서구적 종교 개념의 영향 하에서 비로소 이루어진 것이다. 결론적으로 본고는 주로 이노우에 히로시의 신사사(神社史)적 관점에 의거하여 이런 구로다 테제의 의의 및 한계를 지적하면서, 오늘날 상식적인 통념으로 정착되어 있는 ‘일본 고유의 민족종교’로서의 신도 개념이 실은 비역사적인 허위의식이 라는 점을 규명하고 있다. There exists a kind of religious practice related with Jinja(神社) or Jingi(神祇) in Japan. Nowadays it is generally said that such a practice is 'Japan’s indigenous religion' called Shinto(神道). Furthermore, this world widely accepted understanding about Shinto has been repeatedly reproduced with relation to various types of Nihonjin ron(日本人論) discourses or Emperor system especially in Japan. The purpose of this essay is to raise objection to that understanding mainly from the perspective of the thesis presented by Kuroda Toshio(黒田俊雄), a specialist in medieval Japanese history. According to him, what we call today 'Shinto' is a new concept which was shaped historically in the medieval Kenmitsu(顯密, exoteric esoteric) system based on Buddhist thoughts, and its essence lies in the state ideological characteristics for governing people rather than the simple kami belief(神信仰) or jinja matsuri(神社祭儀). Additionally, he maintains that Shinto has been regarded as an independent religion ranked with Buddhism or Confucianism under the influence of the western notion of 'religion' newly introduced when State Shinto(國家神道) was formed. In short, this paper will pay attention to the fact that the various discourses on Shinto as 'Japan’s indigenous religion' actually include lots of unhistorical fallacies, with critical comments upon the weak points as well as the signification of that Kuroda Thesis.
