Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to examine the meaning of Japanese aesthetic representations like mono-no-aware(物の哀れ) in Peter Greenaway's Pillow Book, approaching through Lacanian psychoanalysis. In so doing, I will apply psychoanalysistic concepts such as desire for writing, writing in the "Imaginary", writing in the "Symbolic", writing in the "Real", writing of Eros, writing of Tanatos, and writing of Jouissance to the interpretation of Pillow Book. Then, special attention will be paid to the writing of mono-no-aware as the writing of Jouissance contains the transition from phallic jouissance to feminine jouissance. In conclusion, this essay will show the psychoanalysistic meaning of Japan=objet petit a, while relating the various Japanese representations in Pillow Book with some concepts of Nihonjin-ron(日本文化論).
