1903年刊 『日韓通話捷徑』에 대하여

Abstract

본 논문은 1903년 5월에 일본에서 간행된 『日韓通話捷徑』의 내용과 제작 배경을 관련 학계에 소개함과 동시에 한일 양언어의 연구 자료로서 본서가 가지고 있는 가치를 생각해 보고자 한 것이다. 메이지(明治)기 일본에서 간행된 한국어 학습서는 청일전쟁(1894년)과 러일전쟁(1904년) 시기에 군사적인 목적으로 만들어진 것들이 적지 않은데 본서는 청일전쟁과 러일전쟁 사이에 만들어진 몇 안 되는 학습서로서 주목을 끈다. 조사의 결과, 본서는 당시 한국에 거주하던 일본인 경찰의 현장 업무를 돕기 위하여 질문에 대한 답변 형식의 대화체로 한국어 본문과 일본어 대역이 기술된 한국어 학습서로 그 성격을 규정할 수 있을 듯하다. 또한 본서의 일본어에는 동사의 활용형, 가능표현, 경어표현 등에서 근대일본어의 과도기적인 언어현상이 반영되어 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 아울러 본서의 한국어에 사용된 한자어 가운데에는 근대 한국어 어휘사 연구에 활용할 수 있는 자료적인 가치가 있는 단어들이 포함되어 있음을 확인하였다. This paper aims to introduce the contents and background of the book "Nikkantsuwashokei" (日韓通話捷徑), published in Japan in May 1903, to academia and examine its value as research material with respect to Korean and Japanese languages. Most study materials on the Korean language published during the Meiji period were created for military purposes -- this is most notable during the Sino-Japanese (1894) and Russo-Japanese (1904) Wars. As this book is one of the few books that were created between the Sino-Japanese War and the Russo-Japanese War, it is of particular interest. Further investigation indicates that the book was written for the purpose of helping Japanese police officers residing in Korea at the time with their fieldwork, as the Korean text and the Japanese translation are in dialogue format. In addition, it confirms transitional phenomena of modern Japanese (such as conjugation, usage of honorifics, and verbs expressing possibility) were utilized in the book's Japanese portions. Additionally, the Sino-Korean vocabulary used in the book's Korean sections possess reference value in studying the history of modern Korean lexicon.
