커스텀주얼리에 대한 연구 - 정의와 기능을 중심으로 -

Abstract

커스텀주얼리는 오늘날 주얼리 중에서 가장 많이 생산되고 가장 많이 착용되는 주얼리이다. 커스텀주얼리의 이런 중요도에 비추어봤을 때 정작 커스텀주얼리가 무엇이냐는 물음에 대한 답은 명확하게 주어져 있지 않다. 이 연구의 목적은 커스텀주얼리의 정체성과 다른 주얼리와 차별성을 역사적인 맥락의 분석을 통해서 그리고 주얼리의 여러 범주를 통해 규명해 보려는 시도이다. 역사적인 발전과정에서 보면 주얼리는 본래 장식의 기능뿐만 아니라 특정한 주술적 기능을 수행하거나 특정 계급의 권력이나 부유함을 드러내주어 복종이나 존경심을 불러일으킨 도구로 사용되어왔다. 그러나 이같은 주얼리의 사회적 기능은 19세기이후 부차적인 것으로 간주되고 주얼리는 아름다움의 관점에서만 생산되었었다. 이때부터 귀금속과 보석만이 아니라, 아름다운 효과를 불러일으키는 모든 것이 주얼리의 재료로 사용되기 시작했다. 이런 상황에서 1차 세계대전의 여파로 남성의 인구가 줄어 여성의 본격적인 사회진출이 시작되자, 이들의 의상을 장식하는 저렴한 주얼리가 공장에서 대량으로 생산되고 이것이 커스텀주얼리였다. 이 커스텀주얼리는 경제적 이윤추구의 목적을 위해 생산되고, 그 재료는 경제적인 관점에서 가격이 저렴하지만 아름다운 효과를 내는 모든 것이다. 생산방식은 제품을 디자인하는 디자이너와 실제로 생산하는 생산자가 나뉘는 독특한 형태를 취하며, 기능의 측면에서 보면 아트주얼리(Art Jewerly)나 파인주얼리(Fein Jewerly)와는 달리 신체나 의상의 아름다운 장식만을 위한 것이다. 주얼리 형태의 범주에서 볼 때 커스텀주얼리는 모든 조형적 가능성이 열려있는 아트주얼리와 고가의 재료를 과시하는 형태적 제한성을 지닌 파인주얼리 사이에 위치해 있다. 그러면서도 그것은 가능한 한 대중적인 아름다운 형태의 디자인을 보여주면서도 수요를 창출하기 위한 형태의 혁신, 즉 새로운 유행의 창출을 위한 압력에 놓여있다. 이 모든 면에서 볼 때 커스텀주얼리는 아트주얼리, 파인 주얼리와는 또 다른, 동등한 종류의 주얼리이다.

Despite the importance of Costume Jewelry there is almost no clear definition about its identity. For that reason, the purpose of this study is to explain the identity of Costume Jewelry and its difference from Art Jewelry and Fine Jewelry, on the one hand by analyzing the historical context in which Costume Jewelry appeared for the first time, and on the other hand by analyzing the categories of the jewelry itself, namely purpose, material, mode of operation, function and form. Historically, jewelry fulfilled not only the function of the beautiful adornment, but also certain religious function. In addition, it represented the power and wealth of the wearer. This social function of jewelry has disappeared since the end of the 19th century. After World War I during which women started to commit themselves to professional work places and became aware of the fashion, a new and unusual kind of jewelry began to appear, which could be produced en masse cheap at the factory for many female consumers. That was the birth of the Costume Jewelry. Costume Jewelry is produced mainly for the commercial purpose. Therefore, in order to be sold in large quantity, materials must be such that they are as inexpensive as possible and can be worked nevertheless beautiful. In the modes of operation of Costume Jewelry, designers and workers are usually separate, whereas in Art Jewelry and Fine Jewelry, a goldsmith masters all processes of producing. The function of Costume Jewelry, which is different from those of Art Jewelry and Fine Jewelry, is purely to decorate the body and the dress beautifully. So it needs to look generally beautiful to most people, and at the same time, it needs to be innovative enough to attract new customers all the time. Considering all these aspects mentioned so far, Costume Jewelry is not fake jewelry, but should be considered one kind of jewelry pari passu to Art Jewelry and Fine Jewelry.
