Abstract
The present study identifies structural stiffnesses and loss factors of foil thrust bearings due to static loads. The static load versus foil bearing deflection measurements determine the structural stiffness during loading and unloading processes. Structural stiffnesses of the test bearing increase nonlinearly with applied static loads. Loss factors, determined from local hysteresis loops, increase with an applied preload on the bearing and decrease with bearing deflection amplitudes of the local hysteresis loops.
