노이즈 듣기: 20세기의 청각 문화 안에서 소음의 소리 정체성

Abstract

이 연구는 음악 역사 속에서 비음악적인 소리로 타자화되었던 소음이 20세기에 이르러 어떻게 음악적 관심을 받게 되는지, 또 음악의 지형 변화에 어떠한 역할을 하였는지 살 펴본다. 소음이 가지고 있는 독특한 소리 정체성은 기존 질서로부터 저항과 혁신을 반 복했던 20세기의 청각적 문화 현상을 이해하는데 도움을 준다. 따라서 이 연구에서는 20세기의 음악 역사 속에서 소음이 어떻게 다루어졌는지 또 작곡가들은 소음을 통하여 어떠한 변화를 이끌어내려 했는지, 대표적인 음악 활동들과 함께 해석해 보는 것을 목표로 한다.

This study examines how noise as nonmusical sound (so-called the “Other”) related to music and what an important role it played to expand musical boundaries in the 20th century aural culture. The noise functioned as structural and textual device to break conventional idea about music. Through the numerous musical experiments of the 20th century composers, and artists the noise earned the reason for its existence as an important musical element. So, the study aims at understanding what changes they produced through the noise, by tracing representative musical activities.
