dc.description.abstractLatino/as have become the largest ethnic minority in the USA since 1999, and their power and influence have been growing in every sector of American society including politics, economy and culture. In Hollywood, Latino/as were for a long time invisible from the screen and were stereotyped as villains, aliens, Latin-lovers or housekeepers. However, these patterns have been gradually changing with the participation of Latino/as in the film production as well as Hollywood’s recognition of their ticket power. To better understand the current trend of Latino/a representation after the Great Immigration March of 2006, this article analyzes three films: Casa de Mi Padre(2012), Elysium(2013) and McFarland USA(2015). These films portray Latino/as not as one of the minority ethnic groups any longer, but as the “mass” who will be the future protagonist of the nation. Also, they suggest the US mainstream embrace Spanish and Latino/a culture while implementing legal, educational and healthcare support systems. Despite inability to envision Latino/as as a “political agent” composed of multiple races and classes, these films open up the possibility of nation’s new bilingual and bicultural identity in which Latino/as can archive their “Americano Dream” as opposed to the monolingual and White hegemonic “American Dream.”en_US
