Abstract
The Korean Wave is now the Korea’s nation brand. Among them, it is fair to say that K-pop has become a core of the Korean Wave. And it is found that many of very successful K-pop have affinity with our folksongs. This shows Korean folksongs have elements to nourish Korean popular music. In order to find objective causes, I studied focusing on the elements which are composed of music itself such as pitch, rhythm, harmony, dynamic, and etc. and interaction between these elements from the point of view of formal analysis. Based on the Schenkerian theory, I analyzed the tonal structures of K-pop, and tonal center and its relation to tonic, subdominant, and dominant to figure out the scale structures, and then studied on synchronous relevance of the motifs. As a result, K-pop is affinitive with the structural elements of folksongs(scale structures and frequentative melody types). Analysis range is 17 songs, having the hooks, on top 30 best K-pop ranking from 2009 to 2010. These 17 songs are divided into four groups by the tonal center. ① the modulation of tonal center ② ‘C’ tonal center ③ ‘A’ tonal center ④ etc. Also, according to the scale structures which are appeared in motifs of each song, there are two types of scales either based on a pentatonic scale or a heptatonic scale. Songs written in a pentatonic scale have affinity with folksongs. The representative songs of K-pop which contains folksongs-like affinity are 〈Gee〉, 〈소원을 말해봐, Tell me your wish〉, 〈Abracadabra〉, and 〈Can’t Nobody〉. In 〈Gee〉 and 〈소원을 말해봐, Tell me your wish〉, the tonal center modulates(from ‘A’ to ‘C’ and from ‘D’ to ‘C’) within a song and the structure of main notes is based on a pentatonic scale. In 〈Abracadabra〉 and 〈Can’t Nobody〉, the tonal center is fixed in ‘A’ and they both use a pentatonic scale. In addition to that these four k-pop songs are based on a pentatonic scale, there is similarity in not only the structures of main notes which are usually used in folksongs but also in the frequentative melody types of folksongs. In fact, it is not important as to weather the composers intentionally incorporate this fact into their creation. This result has provided us with a lot of meanings. Thus it is notable that this result demonstrates a new path for K-pop.
