웹툰 스토리텔링, 변별적 논의를 위한 몇 가지 전제

Abstract

웹툰은 ICT(Information and Communications Technologies)와 향유자의 요구가 결합하여 만화의 형질을 변화시킴으로써 변별성을 확보한 장르다. 따라서 웹툰의 현재는 항상 ‘현재적 의미’ 내지는 ‘최적화의 현재적 형태’라는 의미를 지니고 있다. 웹툰은 만화의 개방성, ICT의 지속적 발전, 관련 비즈니스의 성장과 상관하여 영원한 현재진행형 양상을 나타낼 수밖에 없다. 문제는 이렇게 개방적이고 역동적인 양상으로 새로운 형질을 획득하고 있는 웹툰의 변별성에 대한 분명한 자의식이 부족하다는 점이다. 장르로서의 분명한 자의식을 확보하지 못한다면 독립된 장르로서의 고유성 확보는 물론 변별적인 장르문법을 확보하기 어렵다. 웹툰은 용어에서부터 고유의 생태계 구축 및 비즈니스 모델 개발 등의 전 과정이 한국에서 개발되었기 때문에 한국 특유의 시간적, 공간적 특성을 반영하고 있다. 최근 웹툰은 세계 시장 진출을 도모하는 과정에서 한국의 지역적 특수성을 넘어서 글로벌 경쟁력을 확보하기 위한 전략을 적극적으로 모색하기 시작하였다. 그것은 웹툰 고유의 변별적 특성 위에서 가능한 모색이라는 점에서, 웹툰 고유의 변별적 특성에 대한 고민을 본격화하였다. 이와 같은 본격적인 고민의 시작은 구현 요소별 세분화인데, 그중 스토리텔링은 가장 주목받고 있는 분야다. 지금 이곳에서 웹툰 스토리텔링에 주목해야 하는 이유는 웹툰의 변별적인 스토리텔링 특성을 규명하기 위해서이며, 원천콘텐츠로서의 가치를 극대화하기 위한 스토리텔링 전략의 모색이 필요하고, 현재적 의미에서 웹툰에 최적화된 스토리텔링 전략을 탐구하기 위한 것이다. 웹툰은 디지털 문화환경을 가장 적극적으로 장르문법에 수렴하고 있는 까닭에 상호작용성, 정보의 통합성, 네트워크성을 기반으로 스토리텔링 양상을 살펴보고, 그 특성을 최적화하기 위한 스토리텔링 전략을 구상해야 할 것이다. 다만, 다소 기형적인 웹툰 생태계로 인하여 ICT와 향유자들의 저극적인 향유가 장르문법 안으로 수렴될 수 있는 실험이 침체되고 있다는 점에 주목해야 한다. 새로운 장르의 부상은 새로운 시장의 확보라는 점에서 현재 웹툰이 보여주고 있는 양적 성장에 미치지 못하는 퇴행은 반드시 고민해야 할 지점이다.

Webtoon became a distinct genre of cartoon combining the development of ICT(Information and Communications Technologies) and the demand of the readers. Therefore, webtoon in the present has either meaning of either ‘Present meaning’ or ‘Optimized present form.’ Webtoon must take on the aspects of cartoon’s openness, continued development of ICT, and the growth of related businesses. While webtoon has such openness and dynamic aspects, it has problem of insufficient identity. If it fails to set its own identity, it will lead to the loss of peculiarity of an individual genre and distinct features genre. Webtoon was entirely developed from Korea from its word to unique ecosystem to business model. Therefore unique features of Korean time and space well comply to webtoon. Recently, webtoon has been actively seeking for strategy to gain global competitiveness beyond regional presence. The strategy required the serious contemplating of unique features of webtoon. The beginning contemplating starts from segmentation of elements. The segmentation of elements include storytelling and storytelling may well define the distinct features of webtoon. The value maximization of source content and optimized strategy of webtoon may be seeked from the process. During the process, storytelling strategy optimizing the features has to be set considering the interactivity, integration of information, and network base of digitalized genre, webtoon. However, the attempt of ICT and the readers’ enthusiasm to converge into the distinct genre feature may depress the webtoon’s inappropriate environment. The rise of the new genre may be meaningful since it’s the development of a new market, but the lack of reaching the anticipated market size could lead to the holdback of the entire cartoon industry’s growth.
