Perception and Associated Factors on Patient Safety Culture of Care Helper in Nursing Facility

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the perception and associated factors on the patient safety culture of care helpers in nursing facilities, in order to use it as basic materials for establishing a patient safety culture. The Korean-type nursing home patient safety culture measurement tool was used for all care helpers in eight nursing facilities, and the SPSS/WIN 21.0 statistics program was used for data analysis. Perception for patient safety culture was at a medium level, and among the four sub-fields, work attitude was highest and management activity was lowest. Associated factors included the number of beds in the nursing facility, facility safety management level, weekly working hours, number of safety accident reports, and direct contact time. In order to enhance perception on patient safety culture, and to prevent safety accidents, it is necessary to provide a system of open communication between administrators and care helpers, as well as improved working environments and welfare, based on the lack of discussion and communication of accidents that occur. Furthermore, it is necessary to search for effective education plans befitting care helpers, and establish ways to improve the quality of nursing services by procuring specialized human resources.
