웹툰 확장 사업과의 시너지 모델 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 최근 빠르게 성장해온 웹툰이 타 콘텐츠산업으로 확장되는 현상을 살펴보고, 웹툰을 포함한 확장된 산업 간의 역할과 시너지 모델을 확인하고자 하는 배경에서 출발하였다. 웹툰은 만화산업 내에서 중요한 비중을 차지하게 되었다. 그리고 성공한 웹툰의 콘텐츠는 영화, 드라마, 게임, 문구 및 식음료로까지 생산되어왔다. 이렇게 확장된 산업은 웹툰산업과 별개의 사업으로서가 아니라 연계되고 시너지를 창출할 수 있는 가능성이 있다고 판단하여 적용 가능한 모델을 모색하게 되었다. 적용을 검토한 모델은 미국의 Marvel(마블)사의 사례이다. 과거 Marvel Enterprises(마블 엔터프라이즈)는 만화사업, 완구사업, 그리고 영화와 기타제품을 라인선싱 하는 라이선싱사업을 영위하였다. 마블은 해당사업 간의 역할을 구분하고 시너지를 통해 사업을 추진하여 6∼7년간 회사를 파산의 고난에서 규모 있는 성장과 수익성을 이뤄낸다. 해당모델에서 만화사업에 웹툰을 대입하고, 완구사업과 라이선싱사업을 웹툰에서 확장된 연계사업으로 적용하여 시너지 모델의 적용을 연구하였다. 연구결과 다양한 파생사업과 상품으로 확대된 웹툰의 적용 가능성을 확인할 수 있었다. 가장 성공적인 사례로 꼽히는 <미생>의 경우 웹툰과 드라마 그리고 단행본과 기타제품 간에 시너지가 제시되었다. 그리고 웹툰서비스를 시행하는 네이버, 다음카카오 등의 포털 사이트 운영회사와 레진엔터테인먼트 등의 전문사이트 회사와 더불어 종합엔터테인먼트 회사인 CJ E&M(씨제이이앤엠)이 기업으로서 모델을 적용할 수 있는지에 대한 가능성도 살펴보았다. 나아가 해당 모델을 통한 글로벌 진출의 의의를 집어 보았다. 이러한 연구는 국내에서 급속도로 발전하는 웹툰산업이 새로운 사례와 모델을 통해 앞으로 타 산업 간의 연계를 통한 시너지 창출을 모색하고, 글로벌 시장으로의 확장에서 균형있는 발전을 고려할 수 있게 된다는 데 의의가 있다.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the synergy model between fast growing webtoon business and expanded businesses from webtoon. Webtoon has grown to be an integral part of cartoon business. The successful of webtoon elements have been carried over to other related businesses including movie, drama, game, stationary, food and beverages. The need for the synergistic model study the webtoon and related businesses was recognized to benefit the domestic growth and globalization of the industry. Marvel is chosen as a case study. Marvel Enterprises in the past had businesses in cartoon, toy, and licensing business including motion pictures and other products. Marvel has recognized the relative roles of the businesses and built a synergy model which helped the turnaround of the company in 6 to 7 years from on the verge of the bankruptcy. For the model webtoon can be substituted for cartoon, and other businesses for toy and licensing businesses of Marvel in the past. As the result of the study, one of the case, webtoon illustrated the potential model. One of the successful case, ‘Mi-Sang’, the synergy was found among the webtoon, drama, cartoon graphic novel and other related products. Webtoon servicing portal including Naver and Daum Kakao, webtoon specialty site, Lezhin, and media and entertainment company, CJ E&M were reviewed for suitability of the model. Further, potential application for global expansion model was discussed. This study is meaningful not only in recognizing the new model development in Korea, but also the potential model to support the expansion in global market.
