- Abstract
- This study introduces a smart colorimetric display technology, in which iridescent chiral nematic films made of oxidized cellulose nanocrystals (OxCNCs) exhibit pH-responsive color changes. To endow the dried OxCNC films with controlled reflection of circularly polarized light at specific wavelengths, we manipulated the half-pitch distance (1/p) from 147 nm to 270 nm, which was achieved by adjusting the surface charges of OxCNCs during 2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical (TEMPO)-mediated oxidation. Taking advantage of the controlled electrostatic repulsion generated by the difference in the surface charge of the OxCNCs, we showed that the reflection wavelength of the films could be tuned with ease across a broad color spectrum. In a subsequent study, we also fabricated ductile OxCNC composite films by hybridizing a hygroscopic polymer, polyethylene glycol, while maintaining their iridescent color. We experimentally demonstrated that the OxCNC composite films showed the reversible color change in response to the vapor of aqueous solutions of different pH, thus opening up a new way to develop a vapor pH-responsive color display technology.
