Abstract
In general, the key point in adsorption technology is considered to be the selection of an appropriate adsorbent for efficient removal of VOCs. In many previous studies, extensive efforts have been put to evaluate the sorptive performance of various materials towards diverse target VOCs (e.g., aromatic hydrocarbons). However, there is a lack of data in the current literature towards their application for the removal of VOCs such as benzene under the real-world conditions, especially in terms of its prevailing concentration levels. Most studies have been conducted at unrealistically high-pressure conditions to overestimate their performance. To demonstrate the effect of selected partial pressure on the removal performance evaluation of materials, it is important to describe how the sorption behavior of sorbent varies across varying range of partial pressure. In this thesis, benzene was chosen as the representative VOCs. In chapter 2, analytical systems for carrying out the adsorption evaluation in a wide range (e.g., 0.01–5 Pa) was examined. To this end, the combination of thermal desorption-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry system capable of low-concentration levels analysis and gas chromatography/flame ionization detector equipped with a large volume injection system capable of high-level analysis was suggested for benzene adsorption. The excellent response factor (RF) values (11,522 ng-1) and method detection limit (MDL; 0.14 ng [0.43 ppb]) were found in the TD system. However, reproducibility (i.e., relative standard error (RES)) was better in LVI (0.72%). We identified adsorption behavior using 1 ppm benzene for both systems using five materials. These systems showed slightly different results due to 1) the sampling flow rate (100 at TD and 300 mL min-1 at LVI system) and 2) the difference between the continuous (at TD system)/discontinuous adsorption (at LVI system) process. The adsorption capacity (mg g-1) of the AC212, CE, CD, U6, and M199 obtained in TD (LVI) system at 10% BT was 12.2 (10.1), 6.49 (5.40), 5.02 (0.63) and 1.83 (1.73) mg g-1, respectively. Overall, the results were slightly lower in the LVI system. Generally, faster flow rates lead to faster breakthroughs. The gas molecules on the surface of the adsorbent can also diffuse into the pores and they can have enough diffusion time under static adsorption. Therefore, even though they are loaded on the adsorbent at a high flow rate in the LVI system leading to the discontinuous adsorption process, the adsorption performance exhibits just a slight difference due to the mutual offset. In particular, they showed similar BT curves for all materials except AC212 when they reached nearly 100% breakthrough. The difference in initial adsorption behavior observed in this study, such as 10% BT, may not be significant at wide partial pressures of 0.01-50 Pa (0.1-50 ppm). Therefore, it is required to evaluate the adsorption performance at a wide partial pressure by applying these systems. Therefore, we have identified and evaluated the behavior of 1 ppm gaseous benzene adsorption as a basic study to evaluate adsorption performance using TD-GC/MS system and LVI-GC/FID system. This gives a link point for collecting and combining a broad range of adsorption data. There has been a rapid rise in the application of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) towards air quality management. Nonetheless, relatively little is known about their application under the real-world conditions to reflect their capacity to treat VOCs (e.g., benzene) at ambient partial pressure (e.g., in ppb levels). This is because most studies have been conducted at unrealistically high-pressure conditions to yield biased performance data. In chapter 3, to assess the effect of selected partial pressure on the performance of MOFs, the sorption behavior of benzene by two MOFs (MOF-199 [M199] and UiO-66 [U6]) was analyzed in reference to activated carbon [AC] over a wide pressure range of 0.01 – 5 Pa. Interestingly, at the highest pressure (5 Pa), M199 was observed as the best performer in terms of the maximum adsorption capacity (mg g-1): M199 (94.8) > AC (93.5) > U6 (27.1). Nonetheless, its capacity (mg g-1), when determined at 10% breakthrough volume (BTV10), dropped systematically with decreases in the benzene pressures to observe a full reversal in their order at 0.01 Pa: 0.32 (M199) vs. 4.57 (AC). As such, its BTV10 value (atm g-1) at 0.01 Pa was far smaller in M199 (1,067) than in AC (14,410). Likewise, if the partition coefficient (PC) values (mol kg-1 Pa-1) are derived for 0.1 ppm benzene at BTV10 , AC outperformed MOFs: AC (56.5) > M199 (4.12) > U6 (1.22). It is thus recommended that the use of biased performance metrics (e.g., adsorption capacity derived at excessive pressure conditions) should be avoided. Instead, the experiments should be conducted practically to reflect the ambient conditions rather than unrealistically high partial pressure conditions that can significantly exaggerate the performance of MOFs. On a whole, this study was conducted to construct data sets for the sorptive behavior of various sorbents (including advanced functional materials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)) under a broad range of benzene loading conditions.
