However, most parallel mechanisms also suffer from some disadvantages, such as small workspace, parallel singularities, and non-linear forward kinematic solutions. These three main disadvantages are still open problems that many researchers in this area are focused on. In this dissertation, several parallel mechanisms featuring with larger workspace, less parallel singularities are proposed based on desired applications. Firstly, some theoretical result regarding kinematic modeling of the kinematically redundant parallel mechanism via screw theory was discovered. Even through screw theory has been successfully applied to develop an analytical Jacobian of non-redundant parallel manipulators, screw theory has seldom been attempted for modeling of parallel manipulators with kinematic and force redundancies to the best of our knowledge. Through a simple non-redundant 3-RRR planar parallel mechanism and its variations, we demonstrated how to derive Jacobian of parallel mechanism with kinematic and force redundancies. Secondly, the design of gravity balanced parallel mechanism was presented. Two commonly used approaches, i.e. counterweights and springs were used to derive the static balancing conditions of one stackable mechanism by using the constant potential energy method. By employing the gravity balanced stackable mechanism as the building block, type synthesis of gravity balanced parallel mechanisms was also performed. Due to small actuation torque required and high level of safety, proposed parallel mechanisms have relatively large potential to be used in many applications. Thirdly, one gravity balanced 3T1R parallel mechanism (Schönflies-Motion Generator) proposed in above was selected as an example mechanism for analysis due to its potential applications in the pick-place-assembling task and also the haptic device. This 4-DOF parallel mechanism was redesigned by using only two limbs, which implies simple architecture and large workspace inherently. Furthermore, all the actuators are located close to the base platform due to the special usage of the stackable mechanism. Kinematic modeling, singularity analysis, performance evaluation and optimal design were performed in detail. The counter-balancing prototype was developed by using a 3D printer to very its motion and gravity property. Fourthly, in order to alleviate parallel singularities existed in the gravity balanced 3T1R parallel mechanism proposed above, two degrees of actuation redundancies were added. It was found that there exists no parallel singularity inside the workspace excluded its boundary. Moreover, three load redistribution algorithms to resolve the torque saturation problem were investigated. Comparison analysis showed that the suggested new algorithm considering a relaxed form of torque limit has advantages over the other two pre-existing algorithms in aspects of less computation time and more robust capability to deal with the general type of torque saturation problem. Finally, kinematic redundancy was employed to reduce parallel singularities of the 3T1R parallel mechanism proposed above. Kinematic modeling via screw theory method proposed above was applied to develop its Jacobian matrix in analytical form. It was found that singularities can be eliminated by controlling the orientation of the redundant link with respect to the moving platform. Moreover, the kinematic redundancy was utilized do design the gripper. Two kinds of output modules which can be used to grasp regular and irregular objects were proposed, respectively.
